What is a good size coon ?
I've been weighing them.. Smallest is about 8 lbs. Biggest was 23 lbs... which is rare for me. Most are about 15 lbs..

The biggest ones are generally DP's. The smallest ones are in a bucket set.

I got one that was 23lbs when I was ten. I had no idea how big it was. Biggest since was 20lbs but I don't catch many

We get some real big boars in this country late Nov. early Dec. For some reason them big ones come out and travel a little then if the weather warms a bit. I caught one early Dec. in a coyote snare. He went 32 lbs. That is one of the biggest I have caught in a long time.

Depends on your area. Average coon for me is 12. A big one is 15-17. Only got one true 20lb coon. Now if you go 100 miles north. A small coon is 12#

Around here my average is in the 15-19 lbs range, with a small one being anything under 12 . A big one being 20 and up. The 15-19 lbs range mostly board 3XL with a few just making 4XL and a few just missing 3XL

Depends on your area.

That's true as true.
Biggest I've caught ever was 27# but lots more 12-17# and rarely 18-19# but 60-80 miles NW would add a few pounds as you get into crops. Fur guy said ~90% run under 31".

It's interesting.. I caught a lot of small ones early on in the season. Then New Years weekend is when the 20 lb-ers started coming out. A 20 lb & a 23 lb on the same night.

The biggest one I ever trapped weighed In at 31 Lbs The biggest I ever shot weighed In at 52 Lbs, That one was a pet and had escaped It's owners house and my dog ran It into a culvert. Didn't know It was someone's pet at the time.
I'm betting the average coon around here weighs In at around 10 to 12 lbs.

A 20 pounder is a huge coon for my area in KY. I got a big old boar yesterday in a beaver set. Good sized coon for this area and he went 16.5 pounds. Had one more yesterday that was still bigger than average for around here and he went 13.5 pounds. Most of our coon are under 12 pounds and stretch XL or 2XL. A 3XL coon is a really good coon here and a 4XL is the odd exception.

I kill 18 and 20 ponders on average ( released all that look smaller than 3X ) I do kill a few over 20 every year. This year I’ve killed one at 24#4oz. and last year a 22 1/2 # , 26# is my biggest and have only killed two that big. My old fur buyer bought a 32# that came out of a grain elevator just a few miles north of me , never seen another close to that around here .

I'd say one out of every 100 or more exceed 30 lbs in Michigan. I can't recall a 40 lber but would like to see such a brute.

I told an old 'coon hunter that I think the two biggest I ever caught were 22 and 24 lbs.(I may have 1 caught bigger but didn't weigh it) He said those didn't sound big to him.

About a year later he admitted that I might be right about those being big for around here. He said he took one he thought would be at least 30lbs so he weighed it. It was 24 lbs and he said it had to be nearly as big as any he'd ever killed. I was surprised that he never weighed any of his before.

Those mid west 'coon are monsters. The only chance we trappers in the east would have of approaching those weights would be with some in-town dumpster diners.

Got a buddy that pressure washes restaurants at night and said the coons at the dumpsters would go 30# easy. He also said they have to spray them with water to get them to leave, lol.

Gryhkl a lot of coon hunters ( myself included ) skin their coon in the woods unless they have a market for the meat. Most of the ones I weighed got carried out and weighed because of a disagreement over size ( I’m just hard headed enough to carry a 20# coon a mile back to the truck to prove that it wasn’t 25# coon ) these days if go along I will carry a small digital scale that goes up to fifty pounds. I’m older and wiser , lol !

I have the pleasure of having two neighbors that have about two dozen deer feeders out in early July. Makes for some big coon when they are well fed for five months. My biggest was 38 lbs but I get quite a few over 30lbs.
