We had 1.5" of snow before it rained .7" of rain that turned to ice then 2" of snow on top rendering all sets useless as they walked on top of the mess. While running the line yesterday I came across some activity I have not witnessed before. The coyotes were digging for acorns on an oak ridge. At first I couldn't figure out what they were up to. After examining closely the only thing I could figure is they were foraging for acorns. Anyone ever see this behavior before? Temps were close to zero the night this took place.

It seems just about everything eats white oak acorns.

So thaaats the secret to the nuts lures. No worry your secret is safe with me grin

That first rain/wind storm this fall, white oaks were heavy with nuts, forest floor was like someone dumped marbles by the drum full. Major natural animal magnet.
The pins were ignored for the most part, reds held none this time here.

I would have thought they were digging for other critters that eat the acorns, kind of like when they show up on a trail cam visiting corn piles. I don't know much though.

Very good source of protein to go with the low protein corn they glut on in the fall. In some cases or places the coyotes live in the corn fields and come out to eat acorns, get water and or tour their home range.

All fall I noticed in coyote scat what looked like acorn shells. I'm sure it's possible.

My good friend had a place down near Grand Rapids that had a lot of acorns. Many times he saw both coyotes and fox scrounging the big yard for acorns.

Squirrelly coyotes? I have no doubt after watching a grey fox eat the unpopped popcorn kernels that I threw out the front door.

I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

What don't they eat would make for a very short list.

I do not know what jibbass means.
I have improved my spelling, punctuation, and proper use of cap letters though.
Internet trapping is tough.

On topic. Do coyotes search out and eat acorns?

Just recently there was an article where some University students made an "amazing discovery" documenting wolves feeding on fish during spawning runs. They learned what most of us already knew - Predators are opportunistic.
