I know there are such things as google etc, however the internet is full of idiots, so I like to get recommendations from experts about the best places to get *real* info..

having said that, anyone recommend a site or better yet an actual book that has animal track identification..

Chris

My old favorite that I always carried as a kid was I think 'The North American field guide to animal tracks' one of a series of field guides that I lived by in my outdoor explorations.

I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

X2! Got a copy for my 10th birthday years ago. It was always my go to book and never very far from my reach. Now days with smart phones we can look it up on line.

I have done that of course, however...as a complete noob, how would I detect BS from not BS? that's my point.. I'm not interested in wikipedia keyboard warriors declaring what's correct, im interested in ***real*** information..

I work in Tech (software dev) and the amount of absolute ignorance spewed online is astounding. so I dont assume its "authoritative" unless someone who would know says it is..

think "of course I know how to do that, I watched youtube!" how confident would you be.. really?

thanks all, I'm not being snarky, just a thing...

Trapperman folks are being given quite the compliment here!

Software developers are typically quite particular about details. One small error in a line of code can cause all kinds of problems!

thanks for all the great info all. please dont assume I was trying to be an jerk, it's that we have given up passing generational knowledge from one Elmer to another, from grandparents to child, to google.. we as a society only get the knowledge that ...

1) google feels is relevant (have they always proven to be trustworthy??)
2) knowledge that isnt necessarily vetted..

we are losing as a society because of it.

thanks to all

Several of the state game departments have publications of tracks and all I have seen are fairly accurate. The Beartracker site is loaded with photographs and the photographer is very good at explaining where she found the tracks and how they differ from other tracks. I believe it's a part of her work.
If you look at similar tracks on three sites and they all have similar info the chance of BS is slim, if you find 7 sties that agree the chance of BS is getting very small.
Truth though, some tracks may not be easily distinguished by print alone, you need to learn how the animal travels- straight lines, zigzags, wandering trail etc. and how the feet group as they hit the ground.

This put out by the US government and even they got it mostly right. https://www.fws.gov/newengland/pdfs/Track_Card.pdf

You can post tracks on here and we will do our best.

Does anyone live close to Chris that can teach him tracks and tracking? A day spent with a seasoned trapper would show you a lot.

Just passin through
