This guy was most likely selling these firearms to gangsters and other sorts of riff-raff. If that's the case I have no sympathy for him; it's guys like this that make it hard on other gun owners.

He was released on a 50,000 bond and not charged with a crime as of yet lol, this is Cali. I for one won't jump to conclusions and will wait until this goes through the courts.

Who owns the existing right of way in your city? Apparently the city does. For most of the city, the right of ways are 66 feet, 33 feet each way from the middle of the original road. But in the older part of town where I live, the right of ways are 100 feet, 50 feet from the middle of the original road. The right of way didn't move when they moved the road, it's stays in it's original spot. So even though it's "my" front yard, the city apparently actually owns part of it. (and no reductions in property taxes either, even though they took yard and trees and such, since "our" property didn't change, even though obviously the value of the property changed. We asked.) Homeowners erroneously think the ROW is "their" yard and property when it isn't and never was.

If you live in town and don't mow it then it is yours and you will be ticketed if you continue to refuse to mow.

That doesn't surprise me; probably an illegal alien or something like that. Pretty hard to detain criminals in CA. If it were some honest schmuck who just made a mistake they will probably lock up to make an example out of him for the rest of us honest folks.

I'm aware that the city actually owns it. (now I am at least, the realtor said the right of way went to the sidewalk, and we didn't have any reason to assume she was wrong) That doesn't make it any better. I still call it my front yard. Anybody who has a front yard calls everything from the front door to the street "their" front yard, regardless of where the right of way is. You don't say "honey I'm gonna mow the yard, and while I'm out there, I'll mow the right of way too." Just because they own it doesn't make it suck any less to lose 1700 square feet (17 feet closer to the house, by 100 feet long) of yard, plus three trees.

Here in KS you do own the right of way. The public has right of way. The public can be there without permission of the owner. Likewise the owner doesn't have any say in what the government does with it. You are allowed to pay property tax on it though. And keep it mowed, limbs cleaned up etc. If the government decides to relinquish right of way all control is supposed to go to the property owner. So when the rail roads gave up rail lines here the state decided to turn them into hiking/bicycle trails instead of returning them to landowner use. Of course bicycles are still allowed to be a road hazard on highways and city streets. We never see them on the railroad right of way trails the state has spent millions on.
