In the market for a grinder. It would be nice if I could purchase at cabelas because I have points there.

I want it to grind things like green castor and glands. I’m not worried about doing large volumes but want it to work on tougher glands. In face I prefer it be smaller because you have less waste with a smaller grinder. But I want it to be powerful!

Will I bind something like this up??

I use a food processer for glands and castor. cheapo from Walmart. I put this grinder together from parts at a farm/ranch store. Use it for grinding fish and animals for bait. I bought the motor just for the grinder. If you already have a good motor could build this for about a hundred bucks. Belt tensioner was pieces sold for garage door parts. I'm sure you could figure out your own.

I really like the way glands turn out in a grinder vs a food processor. But I know it takes some muscle with the hand grinder and I’m worried how these sub $200 grinders can handle it.

That’s a nice setup Danny...I just prefer to buy one if there something out there that will suit my needs and in my price range.

We have several grinders of various sizes and purposes. I would think if you really want a good grinder I wouldn't go less then a 3/4 hp unit. If you keep your pieces small you may be fine with a few gallon runs with a smaller hp motor. Keep your knives sharp and don't over work it. Our grinder at Cabelas many years ago was around $400.00 as I recall. But a good investment.

I have had a spare Cabelas 1-hp grinder for many years now. I have had to change some bushings and buy new knives etc but overall it is a good grinder. It will handle most all our basic grinding needs. We have larger and smaller types as well I use for rat glands.

With castor I would cut them into manageable pieces so as to keep it moving well and not wrap around the auger end by the knife. Longer pieces tend to do that. The knife head end by the plate will need periodic cleaning to keep the material moving thru quickly and cleanly. It will gather at the end. When finished grinding I will cut up the bunched up castor pods that didn't grind with a sharp pair of Fiskar scissors.

wow bob I would of never guessed a cabelas grinder would hold up to your use! Although there grinders are put together as good or better then some of the top commercial brands! I bought a elcheapo big box farm store #32 and did like danny but added a 3/4 hrs motor it will grind circles around our commercial 3/4 hrs #22 HOBART. Dried castors will put most grinders to the test! After watching jamies you tube video grinding whole rats I had to test my grinder! lol it or I wasn't prepared for that!

Tony, I have had our grinders get hot and smoke many times and have had to use another one until it cools down adequately so as not to burn them up. I keep cold packs handy on production run days to drape over our grinder motors to help a little. It does work nicely by doing that we have found.

Yes we need to have a couple grinders at the ready especially when in a production grind of 70-100 + buckets of meats and glands to grind. Castor is hard on knives and is best to run it wet/damp a bit and cut into smaller pieces to help the process.

I bought an STX Turboforce 3000 this year and have been happy with it. One handy thing about the company is they sell extra heads for the grinder, so if for some reason you break a head or need a separate head to use for grinding skunk pods you have that option. I had a Cabelas Pro Series DC grinder, but broke the head on it. Can't find extra heads for them so that is basically junk. Then bought an LEM grinder and stripped the gears out of it. We'll see how the STX holds up. That's $450 in grinders there, looks like I should have just bought a commercial grinder from the start.

i know what your saying about getting motors to the point of smoke bob I keep a few cans of compressed oxygen handy to cool them down quick! FYI DONT DO IT WHILE IN USE! sparks from the armature will ignite it

Does glycerin with the castors help the grinder run smoother or just make a mess?
