Just curious, what is your temperature cut off point when you say it is too cold?
Where I live in Wisconsin we get a few days of 20 below zero each year and as a land surveyor
that is the cut off when things no longer function well, including me, lol.
Had a couple days of -40 last year and forget that.
A mid winter day with a temp of 0, sun and no wind is a pleasure to work in except for the frozen ground.
So many of our instruments now are electronic and the battery life sucks in cold weather.
Do your sno machines, etc. hold up in really cold weather, seems like things break pretty easy after -20.

I trap the inner coast, here, and when the salt water coves ice up, I try to stay home, but have been in the skiff around 0 degrees. Outboards don't like it. Biggest deterrent on my line is big northerlies, (40-100 mph.), in winter that create huge seas, and wind-chill that is just too much.

I never take the day off because neither do the animals. It was minus 69 Celsius with the wind when I picked up these two.

Having fun on a trap line, hunting or fishing is one thing.
Taking your mittens off to take notes and or set up a tripod …. not so much fun.
20 below and dealing with cold iron sucks.

Zim when you read some of the notes of the first surveyor that were on the prairies and go back and look at the historic weather records of temps. no you know why the glove over mitten writing is close to a chicken scall. either that or the supply oxen carts came in with some medicinal medicine 60 proof brandy, that wont freeze at -40c/f.

I don't really have the option to wait out the cold weather. Being a weekend trapper, I can't just skip a week. I hate to burn up a vacation day to take off work on a bluebird day. I go a little slower to keep from breaking things. Embrace the suck!

I don't go out trail cutting or wood cutting any more if it is below -40. It doesn't really get cold enough around here any more to stop me from checking my traps. Last winter it hit -47 C (-52F) But my coldest trap check was -43C.

Isn't that like almost -100F?

I have nothing clever to put here.

I once went out calling coyotes in MT. Was - 37 at sun- up and warmed up to -25 for a high.
Laying prone while calling was tough. 20 minutes was tops but holy crap did they come bombing in!!

It seems and I am no expert that is depends on the area you are in. A few years ago trapping in Ohio it got really cold. -30 F was on the thermometer when i looked a few days very early morning trap checking. Nothing out of the ordinary for up North but frigid for Ohio. I checked every at and continued to bait and run traps but my catch slowed down to nothing for an area that when warmer earlier and later was a hot bed of action. When the cold was so far out of the ordinary i think the animals just stopped moving for a few days. In other regions I have seen and heard of guys going out and hitting hard on real cold days. Maybe those animals are just prepared for it and ready. seemed to be the case in my area they said screw it just like i should have. But looking back i still had a blast and got to teach my son the responsibility of being out in temps like that and how to deal and prepare for it so i guess it wasn't that bad at all.

There's no such thing as too cold. Dress up properly, and get to work, it isn't fun at times, but I wouldn't take the risk of losing some fur to scavengers.

I wouldn't take unwarranted risks with my life just to keep from a bit of damage . Normally up here when it gets really cold, fur stops moving anyway.

Things break too easily a low temperatures and a guy could easily find himself stranded too far to walk back at temperatures that will do you in.

I foolishly checked traps one day at -55. I got so tired I had to sit down. The first time I found myself nodding I jumped up and kept going. Never again at temperatures like that.

My cutoff now days is -30 Not much happening below that temperature anyway

I am not nearly as old as W17, but like him, I find my cutoff edging "up" each year!

Those of us who have been at it for a while have little left to prove by going out in dangerously cool temperatures.

We have done it! "Many years ago" was the perfect time to do stupid stuff!

Like W17 says, mechanical stuff breaks down far more easily when it is super chilly.

Yep. Like boat steering cables, and outboards in general. Sub-zero temps, saltwater, and open skiffs are generally a bad combo.

On the Railroad we often worked outside at 5o below and colder.Rails and Joint bars snap more often and the rails will pull apart.Cold weather always meant going out to repair the track often at night.
In the early days it was cold on the open motor cars, and it was tough keeping the saws and drills running.Often we would cut rail with a cold chisel, knicking it around the head, web, and base then dropping it across a rail and it would snap clean-quicker than using the railsaw.Later in the mid 90's when we got hi rail trucks at least the ride back after working was better, but when it was real cold the hydraulics would not work on the hi-rail gear, and we had to use the motor car anyway.

I'd figure it was much colder back when White17 was developing the White17 wolverine set and hunting Mammoth.
