I trap the inner coast, here, and when the salt water coves ice up, I try to stay home, but have been in the skiff around 0 degrees. Outboards don't like it. Biggest deterrent on my line is big northerlies, (40-100 mph.), in winter that create huge seas, and wind-chill that is just too much.
Just doing what I want now.

I never take the day off because neither do the animals. It was minus 69 Celsius with the wind when I picked up these two.

Have been out when it was 30 below, with the wind chill 59 below.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I once went out calling coyotes in MT. Was - 37 at sun- up and warmed up to -25 for a high. Laying prone while calling was tough. 20 minutes was tops but holy crap did they come bombing in!!
swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

It seems and I am no expert that is depends on the area you are in. A few years ago trapping in Ohio it got really cold. -30 F was on the thermometer when i looked a few days very early morning trap checking. Nothing out of the ordinary for up North but frigid for Ohio. I checked every at and continued to bait and run traps but my catch slowed down to nothing for an area that when warmer earlier and later was a hot bed of action. When the cold was so far out of the ordinary i think the animals just stopped moving for a few days. In other regions I have seen and heard of guys going out and hitting hard on real cold days. Maybe those animals are just prepared for it and ready. seemed to be the case in my area they said screw it just like i should have. But looking back i still had a blast and got to teach my son the responsibility of being out in temps like that and how to deal and prepare for it so i guess it wasn't that bad at all.

On the Railroad we often worked outside at 5o below and colder.Rails and Joint bars snap more often and the rails will pull apart.Cold weather always meant going out to repair the track often at night. In the early days it was cold on the open motor cars, and it was tough keeping the saws and drills running.Often we would cut rail with a cold chisel, knicking it around the head, web, and base then dropping it across a rail and it would snap clean-quicker than using the railsaw.Later in the mid 90's when we got hi rail trucks at least the ride back after working was better, but when it was real cold the hydraulics would not work on the hi-rail gear, and we had to use the motor car anyway.

I am not nearly as old as W17, but like him, I find my cutoff edging "up" each year!
Those of us who have been at it for a while have little left to prove by going out in dangerously cool temperatures.
We have done it! "Many years ago" was the perfect time to do stupid stuff!
Like W17 says, mechanical stuff breaks down far more easily when it is super chilly.
Pete I'd figure it was much colder back when White17 was developing the White17 wolverine set and hunting Mammoth.
