I got a dozen of those for free. I always use mb 550s, bridgers, Montana. They need some tweaking I can tell. But I was wondering if these are something to use on coyote. Springs seem fine. Or just stick to fox and coon with them.

They will hold up well to coyotes.

Round jawed. I just heard alot of bad reviews on them as far as how they hold up to coyotes. Definitely not built like mbs but don't seem all that bad.

I have 18 round jaw some are offset. I did mod mine base plate and laminate the jaws. If I had to doit over again i would just do the base plate. Either way they do just fine for coyote

The new square jaw ones are a big improvement

Baseplate and crosspiece were too flimsy on mine. Baseplated, plus laminated crosspiece and jaws. Hate to say it, but I love 'em. I have yet to lose a coyote in one. ANd if stolen, not very expensive. I have MB 650's, MB 550's, and a number of other more expensive traps. If they (duke 2's) came with stiffer baseplates and crosspieces, I think I'd only own 2 coyote traps: Duke 2's with round jaw for early season, and Montana 3's for cats and snow. Mine are the offset jaw version.

I used them on coyotes when that’s what I could afford and they did ok. They do need a lot of tweaking and a nasty coyote will tear em up pretty bad but they hold. If that’s what I had I’d use em but Not my first choice

I used to set them when I ran out of mb550’s until I had one blow apart on a big yote and lost what would of been quad at that location. I have brought mb’s now where I won’t run out. I just use them for coon when using pocket sets

They are traps that catch i recommend upgrading chain and I put round bar base plates on mine and bent spring pin ends so the spring pin cant be pulled by a coyote.

I use them in areas that seem to get a lot of people traffic. Have caught a lot of coyotes in the #2. Use them they will work just fine and yep they usually take some tweaking.

I too have a few that I use in areas where I get other human traffic and think I may possivly be at risk to lose a trap or two. Duke 2s are cheap alternative to better built coyote traps and they will get the job done just fine. Same with bridger 1.75s that is also an inexpensive alternative trap I use here where I may get some other human traffic. I'd rather lose an $8 new 1.75 brider or a 2 duke about same inexpenisve price than a more pricey modified 2 or 3 bridger or an mb550.
I've caught and held plenty of coyotes in the duke 2s and bridger 1.75s.
Never could figure out what diference was between a duke 1.75 and a duke 2. Identical traps from what I can tell.
The 1.75 bridgers though already have a base plate, center swivel, machine chain, and better frame and jaws for same price range as the duke 2, by the way. Only weak point on the 1.75 is the thin pan and dog.
I've unbent and field fixed a lot of duke 2s and duke 1.75s after coyote catches but they do work just fine for what I ask of mine.
You know I also use them where I think I might have either coon or coyote catches too. Lot less room under jaws of a duke 2 than a bridger 3.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I have a dozen mb550s and a couple dozen duke 1.75 and #2s I base plated them and drilled out the pan bolt holes and went to a 10-32 thread brass bolt and nut to take the slop outta the pan. to me that was the biggest improvement was the sloppy pan. I haven't though about laminating them but may in the future. you really cant beat the affordability of the duke and as long as you are willing to modify them they can be a great trap.

Quit long- chaining them and there shouldn't be anymore ( blowouts).
They ain't perfect but once they catch, they seem to hold just fine!

swampgas chili and schmidt beer makes for a deadly combo

I agree, a good way to keep coyotes from pulling out is pin em down with a short chain that’s got three swivels and either cross stake or use super stakes. They can’t lunge hard and build momentum that way. I like my 550s with about 8 or 9 inches of chain.

Most blow outs are from coyotes pulling the spring pin

Very versatile trap IMO. Great mink and muskrat trap with the bigger pan and with low pan tension. Great coon trap rigged on a drowner. As mentioned, shorten up the chain and increase the pan tension and it is a good to excellent coyote/fox trap until the snow flies. After a coyote catch you will often need some maintenance pounding the dog straight over the back of a trowel and bending the dog post level again with a pliers as they can work over the thinner metal in those areas. Haven’t had one blown up yet, which I can’t say about other square jawed traps i’ve used. No need to laminate unless you have pet concerns. The #2s seem to have stronger springs and come with longer chain than the 1 3/4s. Cut the chain down, tighten up the pan screw (better yet replace it) and it should be more than adequate. Almost all duke models will take some tweaking to get serviceable but they hold very well.

That's what I started with stock no lams off set jaws. Held up no pull outs but you had to adjust after ever catch it seemed like. But nothing beats free.... Use them up more steel planted more fur.
