A man from Michigan went from “perfectly healthy to brain dead” in nine days after contracting a rare-mosquito-borne disease, according to a local report.

Gregg McChesney, 64, died last month after a “nine-day illness,” according to his obituary. McChesney, of Kalamazoo County, reportedly died from Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE). The disease is sometimes called Triple E, or sleeping sickness.

I don’t believe that. People are perfectly healthy and die from a heart attack everyday.

I had Triple E back in the late 70s,when they knew very little about it.Went to the hospital, they said I just had a migraine headache and sent me home.8 hours later I was in a coma. They didn't know what was wrong till they did a spinal tap and tested the fluid. No cure. You either live or die.I was in a coma for a week,on a morphine drip for the head pain. Its real bad, believe me.

It's no joke.

Here in New York State to the south of me,

it is a hotbed of Triple E and West Nile Virus.

They have been spraying the Big Swamps & wetlands

in Oswego and Onondaga Counties to kill mosquitoes population pools

that are heavily infected with these diseases.

As I am typing this, The radio is reporting that a person

in the Town of Salina has just been hospitalized with West Nile Virus.

TRIPLE E (EEE) typically kills off a bunch of horses

and every few years there are human victims.

Both Triple E (EEE) and West Nile cause a swelling of the brain

typical in Encephalitis.

Mosquitoes are the vectors and birds are also

most often known carriers of this deadly virus.

Man, I seriously hope you don't get infected with West Nile or Eastern Equine Encephalitis. If you do not die, you will think you are. Nasty crap for sure.

West Nile Virus was first reported in Uganda in 1927.

First human case reported in United States in Queens, New York City, in 1999.

I'd bet it came over in a container ship by a stow-a-way mosquito.

Maybe by an virus infected imported exotic bird that got bit by a mosquito,

and spread to other birds by mosquito bites.

Nasty virus.

They say it has spread up to Canada.

Might just be in your future, Jurassic Park.

Wear your bug repellent, bug netting, and long sleeves & pants, Eh ?

Day 29 with West Nile for me today. I have never had anything put me down so hard and fast. I am slowly getting better now but each day is different. Sometimes I feel great and then fifteen minutes later is is like walking into a wall. It is nasty business for sure!

I can't believe that cop put me in the back seat when I clearly called shotgun.

I’ve read that the Triple-E has been back there, in the East, since the middle 1800s, off and on.

I'm sure glad you live in some sand soil area, cause it seems your head is always buried in the sand.

On a topic a will back 160user said his dog had a rapid behaviour change. One sure sign of EEE. With all the moisture that is happening it is no wonder WNv and EEE are rearing their ugly heads.

Culex mosquitoes are a main vector but mainly feed on birds till the light changes past 14 hours of light so they change to mammal feeding starting 15 August.

MT bear with it; it is going to be a long road of recovery. Some survivours are still suffering a year later that I know.It was found that patients in the far east have the virus re-acure 20 years later much like the Polio virus

A very large amount of disease problems in the US come from the around 80 million foreigners who enter the US every year. The around 80 million Americans who travel abroad every year bring back diseases too.

160 million people a year can carry a lot more disease than a few carefully screened birds.

Wild birds are a serious disease vector and know no borders.

With equine mentioned in the disease maybe the government should buy all equine and melt them down to protect us. Seems that is the answer to some "problems" that plague us. Crap happens, get over it. Yes it sucks when it is you or someone you know but none of us will get off this rock 100% healthy.

Get the US out of the UN and the UN out of the US.

I agree, that and the world has become very small with the easy means of travel.100 years ago if someone contracted a foregin disease, chances are they would be dead before they sailed back here.

Mt hope you do not have it as bad as the neighbour, he was in hospital for 2 months induce coma and then total darkness for 3 more months, walking at 7 months, his extremities still tingle because of nerve degeneration.

Interesting that EEE is carried over in a mosquitoe called " the key hole mosq" it lives in holes in trees and the larvae can overwinter with the adults containing the virus survive.
culex mosq complex are the main vector of WNv because of their repetive feeding and heat and continuous water is all they need
The highest populations of mosqs. are in sewage drying flats because of high bacteria food and insecticides are counter activated to be of no use because of the high organic content
In the east Culex pipiens lives in the sewer system and are not killed in the winter and overwinter as adults with the virus.
