Put a little dirt in the bottom and some good stink in the back it should work. Good luck ! Don
I would want some holes in the back for air flow too !

Yes, some air holes in the back for air/scent flow and definitely dirt/soil in the bottom, as metal is a poor substance to walk on especially in freezing conditions.

How would steel be any colder than walking on ice or am I missing something? I don't know if it is but there is still a good chance they will shy away from it.I have better luck with wooden boxes if I put dead grass on the bottom.

First cut slabs on the sides and the top 1X2 across the bottom for stability if your a 110 or 120 fan cut spring slots in the side boards. Cut to length and they take a foot hold that sets on the ground for better bedding also.

How would steel be any colder than walking on ice or am I missing something? Flesh/skin freezes much quicker to metal than to wood, ground or snow/ice conditions. Also, claws cannot grip metal as well as other materials.

Has anyone built a box with no bottom? Yes, but in my opinion they work no better than one with a bottom. Plus they are not convenient for use in tree sets, without the bottom.

However they are quite effective under certain weather conditions. One thing I would somehow add to your boxes are a restricted entrance hole cover of 2 1/2 inches or so. . Mink are attracted to round holes and this size hole will restrict barn cats when trapping farm areas but allow mink into the box.

So I have been debating on how to make some lightweight box's. I work in a machine shop and thought these would work well. Has anyone used in the past? Thanks Yes, tried them didn't care for them I had a lot of reach-ins from coon due to the size of the can and that metal slides on anything even with a stake thru'em that was the biggest drawback if you try some find a person with chickens or rabbits and fill 1/2 or so with fresh litter before you set and wedge them solid at your locations

Well "Beav", there are many other areas in the US that have circumstances and climate similar to much of Canada. Boxes worked quite well for me when I lived in the lower mainland of BC which has the same conditions as western Washington State and where I live now is much like the northern rocky mountain states.

I really thought they were the ticket on frozen marshes but I only had moderate success. Most catches were near muskrat houses. The other locations that made catches were small spring seeps running into an open stream in mid Winter cause the water was not deep enough for foothold drowning. Again, the catch was not spectacular given the effort and equipment. I even used various trigger configurations but had most success with conipans made from 1/4 inch mesh. Still nothing to cheer about in the mink department but got some big weasels. I really wish they worked better down here but they just don't. Now with the price of prime winter coon expected to be worth trapping, I will set frozen marshes near home with 160s in boxes during the January thaws. I'll probably catch mink ....gofigure.
