I have some old victor #2 double long springs with free falling pans that don't have any apparent way to adjust pan tension. I thought once upon a time I saw on here a way to upgrade/modify the pans so they are adjustable. If so does anyone have a pic of what you did?

Lay the part of the frame where the dog is connected to on its side on an anvil and hit it once firmly with a hammer. Check tension so see if the gap got smaller and is starting to pinch the dog. If loose, hit again. Better to go too light than too heavy. Once it gets pinched I don't think there's a way to loosen the tension. That's what was shown to be by a guy in my trapping club. I tried it on my Victor #4s and it works good.

You can file a miles trigger on them to add pan tension or replace the pans with PIT style pans for adjustable pan tension.

I base plated a dozen and added pits to them, work great now. Call Ed Medvitz - 1-724-479-9442, he is the inventor and owner of the pit pan systems, he can walk through what you need to know. Not sure I ever talked to anyone who knows more about traps than Ed.

I modified my #3 and #4 long springs…..pretty sure I did a few #2s also. I am always tinkering. I too did not like the way the pans were. But seeing as they been that way for years I just learned to get along with them the way they were. But a few years ago I decided to do something about those loose pans, so I could adjust the poundage it takes to make the trap trip. I pried open the slot on the pans and took the pan completely off. I then closed the slot on the pan and welded it shut. filed and ground my weld so it looked just like a solid piece of steel with a hole in it. Then I took my trap and ground and filed that strap of steel that the pan was around on the cross frame. Filed and ground until you could no longer see it was ever there. I welded a small bushing in the V (1/2 of the v, one side) [Linked Image]

of the cross frame (underneath) where the pan was attached before. Then I put a bolt with a lock nut thru the bushing and thru the hole I made on the pan. Tighten it to where I want it for tension. The way I did this lowered the pan considerably. And I had to bend the frame in where the dog attached. Also I put a bend on the end of the dog. This works ok but someday when I get the tinkering feeling I'll probably make a new dog and files everything so it is more crisp on the trip action. I only did a few dozen of the big LS. Really don't set them much anymore as I usually use all coils. But if it is a dry fall , I set a few long springs just to bring back the feel of the old days.

That's really nice NebrCatMan. I like that a lot and great pics of showing how and where you made the mods.
