So i got a old recipe book for lures and baits, and a few of them call for seal oil. And of course it hard to get ahold of so was wondering what is the best thing to use in place of it? I have talked to other lure maker's and i have come up with 3 different oils they recommend bt. Oil, salmon oil and trout oil. So ive made some with each and have got good results with beaver tail oil and the trout oil trying them out on predators anyway. The Marten lure calls for seal oil so im going to try all 3 oils . Thanks for the help.

If u came across extra I'd buy some or trade you for some other lure ingredients. From my testing its some top shelf stuff.

I was reading somewhere and I dont remember where or who but they were claiming that thick black catfish oil was as close to the real seal oil that they knew of for what ever its worth. I believe Forsyth Lures still sells seal oil but cant ship to the US. Might call them and see what they think is a good replacement. Very good thank you

There was some black catfish oil for sale at our state convention this year. I dont know what was in those jugs but i know it was NOT black catfish oil. Smelled like old fryer grease. No clue where the color came from.
I cant imagine ( never had seal oil to experiment with) that seal oil is any more attractive than any of the other good oils out there. Beaver tail oil, spoonbill oil, trout oil, catfish oil. No magic in a jar but everybody keeps looking for it.
Anytime something is hard or impossible to get or very expensive, everybody immediately thinks that must be the magic bullet. Tonquin comes to mind right off.
The real secret is quality ingredients. More junk for sale than the good stuff. Somebody buys rat glands say, "properly ground and preserved", and doesn't catch much they think that rat glands are not working for their test. The reality is there may have not been any rat gland in the jar they bought.
A lot of those old published formula's are a joke. I have an old Newhouse how to book printed in the late 1800's that recommends coating fox traps in blood to hide their smell.
Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Some of my trapping friends In Alaska had some seal oil and as far as I could tell when smelling It, that It wasn't anything special.

Ok thanks bob j. I just want to work up these recipes as close to what they call for as possible. I'm already more than pleased at what some have done. Just trying to make them like glen did, i got all the ones i liked made up for bobcats and k-9's. Now I'm working up misc. Marten ,mink and muskrat. Trying to come up with all the stuff for his weasel lure is going to be next to impossible lol.

Taximan , when you smell the seal what do you think it smells like? And would be the closest thing to it. Thanks
