So i got a old recipe book for lures and baits, and a few of them call for seal oil. And of course it hard to get ahold of so was wondering what is the best thing to use in place of it? I have talked to other lure maker's and i have come up with 3 different oils they recommend bt. Oil, salmon oil and trout oil. So ive made some with each and have got good results with beaver tail oil and the trout oil trying them out on predators anyway. The Marten lure calls for seal oil so im going to try all 3 oils . Thanks for the help.

Salmon and Trout oil are very similar if not equal. I am speaking of sun rendered oils and not the popular fish oils sold on the market as replacements for the real oils.

Paddlefish oil is also a very good sun rendered oil that has good value in formulas.

Thank you, and very good to know about the paddle fish oil. Shouldn't be a problem next spring getting ahold of some of that to sun render

If u came across extra I'd buy some or trade you for some other lure ingredients. From my testing its some top shelf stuff.

I was reading somewhere and I dont remember where or who but they were claiming that thick black catfish oil was as close to the real seal oil that they knew of for what ever its worth. I believe Forsyth Lures still sells seal oil but cant ship to the US. Might call them and see what they think is a good replacement.

There was some black catfish oil for sale at our state convention this year. I dont know what was in those jugs but i know it was NOT black catfish oil. Smelled like old fryer grease. No clue where the color came from.

I cant imagine ( never had seal oil to experiment with) that seal oil is any more attractive than any of the other good oils out there. Beaver tail oil, spoonbill oil, trout oil, catfish oil. No magic in a jar but everybody keeps looking for it.

Anytime something is hard or impossible to get or very expensive, everybody immediately thinks that must be the magic bullet. Tonquin comes to mind right off.

The real secret is quality ingredients. More junk for sale than the good stuff. Somebody buys rat glands say, "properly ground and preserved", and doesn't catch much they think that rat glands are not working for their test. The reality is there may have not been any rat gland in the jar they bought.

A lot of those old published formula's are a joke. I have an old Newhouse how to book printed in the late 1800's that recommends coating fox traps in blood to hide their smell.

Those who would give up essential liberty, to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin (1706-1790)

Some of my trapping friends In Alaska had some seal oil and as far as I could tell when smelling It, that It wasn't anything special.

Being that many rendered fats resulting in an oil by product will carry the odor of an animals preferred and primary diet many times.

Being that the primary diet of a seal is fish it most likely would have a bit of a mild fishy odor. I smelled some many years ago at a convention and some in Alaska in the late 60's. Now years later as I think about it I recall a hint of fish to the oil that I smelled.

Being that is the only seal oil that I have smelled I haven't smelled enough different samples to say for certain that was the natural final odor. I am sure most if not all rendered seal oil is the result of an artificial heat source of some kind.

I doubt in that latitude that they would have a long enough direct solar heat from the sun for that type of rendering process to take place. I barely get enough solar heat in my region to render trout oil each summer. Working on another system currently.

However that being said I would say that Gator oil would be in the " good to use " category as a replacement oil in some of those formulas that calls for seal oil.

I don't think using any of the oils mentioned in this topic would alter the final odor that much. Making a few batches of lure using each different oil and aging them for a few months would give you the answer you are seeking. Final odor comparisons would be interesting if there were any significant differences and testing would prove their effectiveness.

Fatty oil residues share many similarities. Might as well use what is available and test each for attractiveness.

Ok thanks bob j. I just want to work up these recipes as close to what they call for as possible. I'm already more than pleased at what some have done. Just trying to make them like glen did, i got all the ones i liked made up for bobcats and k-9's. Now I'm working up misc. Marten ,mink and muskrat. Trying to come up with all the stuff for his weasel lure is going to be next to impossible lol.

Beartooth, sorry I took so long to get back to you.I think the best bet would be to Pm me your address and I will send you a small sample.

I have heard several people say that seal oil wasn't a big deal and some other were at least as good.
