I smoothed down the jaws on a couple of traps the other day. It seemed like it took forever, but I was just using a file. How do you guys do it? Also, do you leave the jaws in the trap or take them out? thanks

I use the heavy grit belt on my Work Sharp knife sharpener without the guard. I just took the springs loose so the jaws were easily manipulated.

I've trapped for 70 some years and I don't ever remembering smoothing off any trap jaws.
I think most trappers over think things.

I have a friend that sands off the burrs on the whole trap and paints every single trap he owns one by one not dipping. I asked him once if he thought he worked in a body shop or not. He said he just prefers them to look nice.

You’re that old? I don’t know why, but I figured you to be quite a bit younger than that.

I use One Hand Setters to hold them open.I do some file work to radius a sharp edge and the Dremel flap wheel to smooth it up.Done right,it will cut down a lot on foot damage.

I heard dirt is older than Beav. And White-17 was an elder WAY before Moses got his bottom slapped and took his first breath.
Just sayin'......

I get why you would but my coyotes will all have the same end result, there sore foot wont be sore long after they see me. I would recommend a flap wheel also if i was to do it though. But maybe you need a new file also, it should cut into steel trap jaws no problem.
