I smoothed down the jaws on a couple of traps the other day. It seemed like it took forever, but I was just using a file. How do you guys do it? Also, do you leave the jaws in the trap or take them out? thanks

Flap wheel or 2" sanding disk in an air grinder.
Common sense is a not a vegetable that does well in everyone's garden.

I've trapped for 70 some years and I don't ever remembering smoothing off any trap jaws. I think most trappers over think things.

I have a friend that sands off the burrs on the whole trap and paints every single trap he owns one by one not dipping. I asked him once if he thought he worked in a body shop or not. He said he just prefers them to look nice.

I get why you would but my coyotes will all have the same end result, there sore foot wont be sore long after they see me. I would recommend a flap wheel also if i was to do it though. But maybe you need a new file also, it should cut into steel trap jaws no problem.
