Between the 15,000 Russian sables being offered at SAGA tomorrow (Dec. 20th) and the Thompson Tables sale this weekend, marten trappers will have a good idea where the market is this year.

The write ups from Saga was that they were not meeting their Goal prices and and and. You know there are some unemployed NAFA spin Dr's needing a writing carrier on board now.

Here is the Russian Sable catalog with results in euros: https://sagaext2prodreports.blob.co...other-russian_sable_farmed-en_prices.pdf
I've never paid much attention to this auction. Anyone know how these results compare to previous sable sales?

Canadian Trappers Talk Forum this morning posts that last years averages in Thompson for northern Manitoba (nice marten) were $58 CA. and Fridays (yesterday) averages for the same skins were $35 CA., that means last years average was 65% higher than this years average. Plug in the freezer, but let's see what today brings. SAGA's sale in Finland on Thursday and Friday of this week showed good interest in the best of the best farm raised Russian Sables, maybe the top 10%, the next cut down dropped by almost 2/3's in price, that's not normal. They also let most of the goods go. You could buy one heck of a good farmed Russian Sable for 70 Euros, $77USD. or about $100 Ca.

Dont forget the avg at Thompson includes the advance(the advance is quite a bit less than the sale price) from fha,so not the real avg.

When you look at who was buying this year at the Thompson tables it is a totally different playing field, in the past you had 3 cash buyers and two auction house giving advances, now you have two different cash buyers and one auction house.
Last year none of the cash buyer at the table made any money.
With the way the fur market is trending most of the players today will be hard pressed to even cover their expenses for travelling to and from the tables this year.

Just for fun here's a picture of some kind of Russian Sable put up in the 'scrunched' style next to one of my better colored marten. This was at FHA receiver Joe Mattie in Fairbanks.

Needs to be a bunch of money spent doing PR on fur products. Nothing is as renewable, ( think eco green ) as fur; especially wild fur. That message needs to be pushed hard. Forget about all the "humane" trapping standards and focus on the renewable message. Dont run from the animals die part of trapping. Show how renewable and good for conservation it is. Just last night I read the best article on trophy hunting that I've ever read. Everyone needs to read it, then think about how the same things apply to trapping / furbearers.

Last year the consigned goods were also part of the average that amounted to $58 CA. They are part of the average this year as well. That means the figures are accurate.

Faux fur is plastic, and so is Polar fleece and nylon. They take centuries to disintegrate, but most urbanites don't even think about that. Fur is Organic, Free Range, Green, and easily biodegradable. We have nano-plastics raining down on us and enviro's are telling us to "wear more plastic"?

Sojuzpushnina in ST. Petersburg still has most of last year's Russian Sable crop left over, and now another year's crop beginning to be ready for market. You can draw your own conclusion from this.

As a comparison to last year, maybe, but not a true avg to expect on sales.
Even a comparison to last year wont be accurate since you had two entities offering advances last year.

I share these same thoughts on messaging. Problem is, who’s gonna bank roll it?........Especially on a scale that would/could have an impact? This kind of a messaging (PR) campaign ain’t cheap to sustain for years! And with the way fur farming has totally taken over the fur market the wild fur producers have no leverage.

A small levy on every pelt. Buyers and sellers pay equally.
