The traps he's using are #3 dukes and # 4 victors all are offsets since he traps In some states where off sets are required.
Traps are bedded In peat moss and then a light covering of local dirt. And He Is using screen pan covers.

As to replacing traps. In most cases he just knocks off the big chunks and re sets. I'm sure that some traps have to be pulled and cleaned or replaced with fresh traps.

Today he tells me things are going to be a bit short on the catch numbers. Reason being he Is running out of already made sets. It's been so muddy that he hasn't been able to make any re makes. So today he said he Is gong to have to mud In some sets. Sounds like fun to me.

I'll just add a few things to Beav's comments. My comments only apply to the time I was there ridding along. Robert simply reset the same trap at the same hole 95% of the time. If he caught a badger or the set was totally messed up by a 'coon or a coyote he would move the used trap outside the catch circle and make a new set. Except during times of extra cold weather Robert did not wear gloves the photos below show Robert making a set and the results the next morning. Disclaimer, it was dry when I was there. My observations may have been different if it was wet & muddy.

What I like more than anything is he is showing you don't need a $25 trap, fancy bait and lure to catch a coyote. To many people think that if they buy $25 traps it will make them better trappers. They would be better off buying more traps that cost half as much.

Don’t think anyone buys $25 traps thinking they’ll be a better trapper. They buy $25 traps so they’ll have more time to trap rather than working on their $12.50 traps.

Here is the preferred trap after a escape. Robert's trap is a #4 that is base plated and four coiled with four full size springs, With the new chain and added swivels he probably has $30 in them.

I believe choice of traps is a personal preference. It depends on how much you want to or better yet can spend. I’m a newby and am really enjoying Roberts adventure. I am learning a lot and it makes you think. It does indeed let you know you don’t need the newest or shiniest widget to catch lots of coyotes. I saw right away that pre planning and hard work and organization are key. I truly hope he makes his goal. Gets me fired up just watching.

Mr. Robert does uses a variety of traps. He sets some double longs for old times sake.

Yep he looks grumpy. Robert is the man! Period.
What kind of earth anchor is he using? Sorry if I have missed that through out this awesome thread.
