The only explanation I've been able to believe is that the tails are damaged or torn off by rival boars pulling them from the females. I have caught a lot of boar coon with freshly docked or severely damaged tails during their rut in mid to late January.... as well as many healed over ones throughout the season. Every tailless 'coon I've caught has been a big boar.

I caught 2 last week both 3x one completely no tail , the other a one inch stub . Had me wondering if it was a hereditary thing . Fresh bite marks on center of back on both, do you think that is from mating or fighting another male ?

Same as the tail, this is why the big boars have all that grissly scar tissue on the back of the neck, other boar coons trying to pull them off the females during mating.

I have caught a lot of boar coon with freshly docked or severely damaged tails during their rut in mid to late January.... as well as many healed over ones throughout the season. This^^ His running buddy decided it was his turn and bites off his tail. Sows loose theirs very rarely but they do. It is very common in the late season and if it is freshly bobbed, in this market I would not bother bringing it home. It's neck and rump will look like it got in a fight with a roll of barb wire. LLL
