So I've always just thrown my critters in a black garbage bag and sprayed some ant and roach killer in the bag and left it overnight. Seemed to always work. An acquaintance of mine told me that he just hangs his critters out in his shed for 10-14 days and that seems to get rid of the fleas. Has anybody else used this method? Why would hanging a critter in a shed kill the fleas but the fleas don't die on the critter when they are frozen out on the trapline? Thank for any tips.

The fleas will leave a frozen animal out on the trapline. Some can come back to life after being frozen for a couple days then thawed if they stay on the animal. After being frozen for 10 days or a couple weeks for sure there will be none.
Most trappers here working lines leave frozen animals hanging in a woodshed for a week or two, then thaw and skin a bunch at a time.
Land fur caught in the fall I always spray with raid and let hang in the shed for a couple days by a back foot.Animals always skin better after hanging a couple days.

I was told to use Raid also to spray on them for what the OP stated but not for as long as stated. From the fur demos I sat in the past they spray one day and then next they skin and put up the fur.

Depending on where your line is and what you use a snowmobile , boat or maybe a pickup I always tried to keep them in such a way the fur didn't get damaged by what ever rack or what was in the sled behind my snowmobile then I'd put them in a garbage bag with a quick shot of raid flea and tick spray and tie it shut for the ride home.

Giving the raid a few minutes to kill the fleas is ample normally while you dig out a pair of skinning gloves and touching up the edge on your skinning knife.

I use buhach when it was available, let it set for half an hour and most fleas would be dead. I have tried bed bug killing powder with same results. Use a vacuum to clean afterwards. Usually my wolverine and wolves don’t have them. Lynx and marten have a bunch of them

Insecticide sprays do work. But they can be "oily."

Powders are as effective, but MUCH easier to clean off when done.

Tip: Flea powder purchased from a vet office is normally stronger than what is sold over the counter.

Exactly need to leave hung in shed for 10 days to be sure - a couple of days and like they can come back to life. And the stuff in the fall spray with Raid especially around the the rear end and put in a tied off garbage bag overnight. U don't need a lot of Raid if the bag is tied off.

Seems like lynx and rabbits are the worst. Funny thing years ago like the rabbits never had them - can not figure that as they must have but did not bother us.

Trapped up in Northern Ontario one fall to almost Christmas and we got over a hundred marten, and a bunch of other fur, but the marten fleas only got on me and not the other 2 guys in camp.

If it's above zero I will spray with raid. If below zero I will let them freeze solid for a week . That almost always eliminates everything.

FOOL: don't assume that wolverine don't have them. Hair Mites are pretty common on wolverine and bite like the devil !! They are almost microscopic. I recall one wolverine that I sprayed and hung in a bag over night. When I removed the bag it appeared that someone had sprinkled pepper on the critter. There were literally thousands of hair mites that had crawled to the ends of the guard hairs trying to escape the spray. They were still alive !! They were just a fraction of the size of the dot at the end of this sentence. They got sprayed a second time !!
