Got a beam, a MTP razors edge knife and some stretchers. I’ve watched the Coon Creek videos a couple times now. I’m just nervous I’m gunna ruin every pelt I’ve worked so hard to get. Is there an animal(s) that are the easiest to put up? Any advice for a first timer?

Start your practice on the least value pelts; coon and beaver.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.

Join your state trappers association I'm sure they hold fur handling clinics throughout the year and changes are there's a member who lives close by you that maybe willing to help you & show you how it's done.

Take your time and keep after it for me it's very relaxing putting up fur as strange as that sounds.
Allan

bctomca & Allan Minear gave sound advice.
I advise folks to kill, skun and flesh Groundhogs in the off season, for practice.
Not sure if you have Groundhogs in your area.

Too bad there isn't someone in Minnesota that has some experience that would offer to help you out.!!!!!

Here you need to take a trapping education course in order to get a licence. Not only do we teach you how to trap,we also teach you how to manage the resource, skin and put up different pelts(hands on)and how to market your fur.You also get an extensive trapping manual when done.
No trapper education available where you are?

I’m just old enough I’m able to get my license without trappers Ed. Opted out because it’s a pain to find a local class. I found another young local guy that wants to learn to trap. I’ve been thinking I’ll try to find a class and go together.

I’ve asked a 2 local seasoned trappers for some help but both seemed not interested and just told me that I need to do it. Lol, I’m sure that’s true. I do plan to join Minnesota Trappers Association, and hopefully make it to the convention and see some demos.

Boco is more than willing to help, beav is also a wealth of knowledge they have helped me alot I get alot of compliments on my fur. After you get started if you have specific questions post them on this forum I'm sure you will get some help, bctomcat and hern also have alot of good ideas .but there is no substitute for experience, you gotta get your hands dirty. Good luck !!!!

Thanks for the offer, but I’m a little over an hour west of the metro.

If you want to get hands on experience and none of the locals will help you . I'd find out if there are any fur buyers in driving distance . And see if you could go spend the day with them when there putting up fur

I'd also suggest if you don't have one get a good smooth sharpening steel to help keep your knives sharp I like the F. Dick steel for when my knives start to drag a little bit more than I like it takes just a few lite strokes and the edge is back good as new.

Yes, very true.

I think I may look into the DVDs someone mentioned above. I've heard so many great things about those Wi videos.

1 comment I would have is that Mn Trappers Assoc probably puts on some demos. I know Wi does. I think this Fall I'm going to pay close attention to the fur handling demos at our state rendezvous.
