Well, school is cancelled for two weeks so I took my 5 year old out and set 4 beaver traps yesterday. Two 330s and 2 Bridger #3s on chain with a brake rotor in the deep water. I'm still new to this game. On our first check one of our footholds was snapped and about 4 feet down the chain, empty. A beaver had drug a big chew stick in and left it so he was definitely there, also some goose poop on the immediate area. This is my third snapped, empty foothold trap this year. I'm aiming for front foot catches and have only successfully held one beaver. A snapped trap part way down the chain is probably snapping on the chest? Tips appreciated! Most Likely. I always set for front foot whenever possible myself. Most likely cause of chest catch is having the trap too deep, make sure it is set under only and inch or so of water and off to one side or the other, not centered.

You also want them to be walking. I either push a small mud ridge up against the trap or push a few poke sticks around the front of the trap to make them put their landing gear down

Long deep water stakes are the way to go if bottom is conducive to their use. 40lb minimum for a drowning weight.
Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Had a perfect front foot catch this morning in a #3 Bridger. Apparently a 3/4 ton brake rotor can be dragged to shore though......But we're making progress. Thanks all! looks like a nice sized one.

Yinz can show me how to use this Necker 600 properly.......I am getting the hang of it though. Still it would be really cool to have a beaver rendezvous JTaddeo, you can do all the flesh'n for the weekend. You'll get the hang of it after the first 50-100 Beaver. I knew that was coming Hern! Hahahahaha......be careful what you wish for eh?
Keep your boots dry and your powder too.
I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.
Best Regards,
