Most Likely. I always set for front foot whenever possible myself. Most likely cause of chest catch is having the trap too deep, make sure it is set under only and inch or so of water and off to one side or the other, not centered.

Definitely want to offset it. You also want them to be walking. I either push a small mud ridge up against the trap or push a few poke sticks around the front of the trap to make them put their landing gear down

Had a perfect front foot catch this morning in a #3 Bridger. Apparently a 3/4 ton brake rotor can be dragged to shore though......But we're making progress. Thanks all! [Linked Image]

I always prefer drowning stakes to weights unless the bottom is rocky or I am trapping alongside a road where people driving by may see the top of the drowning stake sticking out of the water and steal my trap. A lot of this because I often trap in places where I have to walk a ways in from the truck. It is easier to pack an axe and cut and drive a stake (always make sure you drive the section of the stake you attach the drowning wire to below the bottom of the pond. I've had beavers cut my stakes off flush with the bottom of the pond, particularly green ones with bark. If they do this before you catch one and you don't have the drowner attached near the tip down below the mud you are likely to come back to a rather ticked off beaver on a ten foot leash.) Than it is to pack in enough weights to set three or four traps.

When using weights though I always figure 50# as a rule of thumb and if the bottom is hard and the weights are something smooth (like window weights) I err on the side of caution and add a bit of weight. Once saw a big beaver pull fifty pounds of window weights up on the bank. I've never seen one move a 50# chunk of railroad iron though. And a burlap bag or one of those good plastic woven bags filled with rocks works well if you are trapping in a spot where the bottom is rocky. If there are plenty of loose rocks available all you need to pack are the bags and then fill them on site.

Long deep water stakes are the way to go if bottom is conducive to their use.
40lb minimum for a drowning weight.

Still it would be really cool to have a beaver rendezvous

Keep your boots dry and your powder too.

I remember when a fur check was reality.....now I'm just trapping for the love of it.
