If you go to JC Conners website he has a tip page that has information on why the shock springs are valuable. Think toe catches.... since he's selling shock springs I'm assuming Is tip sheet Is a bit biased. SMDH- of all the people to accuse of being dishonest, I think this might take the cake.

I have had several J hooks straightened by timber wolves. Bye-bye trap. I typically weld then all now, but the one going to the cable stake. Mistake, two more took a walk. Now I use other means to attach them; quick links. But I also note that not a trap with a JC Connor shock spring has ever had the J hook straightened. And these are not the wolf spring just the heavy duty. I can't deny that evidence means something. Most of these are on "short chains" which have to be < 17 inches in the "Lynx Zone". And for the record, on an MB 550 the J hooks give way long before any part of the trap.

I bet if Mr. Duke started selling them and sent you a couple dozen for free they would be the only way to go ! No I wouldn't.. I asked a trapper who catches 800 to 900 coyotes a year and he said shock springs are a . Well you can guess what he said.

Left lane I agree when you have to wake them up or there hiding from you as many times . It just proves to me something that works. Those bughers if they feel like they can hide they settle right in ..
That is exactly how I see it. When they have laid down instead of fighting the trap, I pat myself on the back because as far as I am concerned that rig just did its job perfectly and it is highly doubtful I will change ANYTHING. I have also given a couple pups that strayed too far from home a ride home and of course it is a little bit easier when the dam thing isn't all bloodied from battle.

That Is true but In certain areas drags aren't the way to go.
I trapped live market cats coyotes and fox for 12 years. And never had any turned down by the buyer. Well maybe a few greys there Is just to much fight In those tough critters. And they were all short chained and I never used a shock spring. And no domestic dog ever went home with a bloodied paw. And I trapped In southern hound country. If shock springs are your thing and If they make you feel more at ease then use em but I don't see the need.

I still want to know by who’s definition of long and short chain we’re going by. I'm with you on this question, someone made the comment that they used long chains ( 16" -18"); to me that would be a stock chain with 1 or 2 swivels added. A long chain set-up on my traps run 32" - 36" total length, and I run those on heavier traps as a rule.

You can't beat free stuff buddy. I'm going to have to give away my FREE doz Duke 650s because I can't set them. LOL
I run about 14" of chain on my canine traps. With 3 swivels and for the most part I stake with a wolf fang type earth anchor.

I forget who was giving a demo at a rondy yrs ago- it might have been John Graham I don't remember but the man said he either went with 18 inches or 38 inches or chain and said if he went between those two is where he had problems.
Beaver- you mention trapping the swamp and the rigging that worked best there. Because of that I cant help but wonder if different soil conditions and environments in general dictate which gear will provide the best results. That all sounds good until Mark June gets on here and swats down my theory b/c he traps the same counties I have both in Texas and Kansas and like you he never became a shock spring fan like I am

If you really pay attention, every once on a while, some thinking trapper that actually looks at the big picture will share advice like this trapper did.
