I've caught a lot of bears and even lions, but catching an elk is really amazing!

That type of trap has been used to catch deer and elk for over 40 years. If not checked early they get in tangled or they can get in tangled and die. It should only be used or sit out by the DNR of the particular state it’s been set in my opinion. I just don’t think it’s a good idea to promote it on a Open forum without mentioning it,s use by the DNR in the United States.

The state had 2 of them set for elk on my property last winter. Kirk is 100% correct. They had game cams on the traps that would set off 4 different wildlife research students phones. So the elk could immediately be tagged and if pregnant they would chip the cafe as well and be set free.

Tagged in Utero? or tag the calf?

They would put a chip in utero. Then when the cafe is born they can start tracking both. There is alot of studying going on with the elk in pa. Never knew it was that intense until a couple people showed up on my property asking if they can trap and track the elk that stay on it.

What bait do you use ? Home built trap ? or store brought ?

It's an intersting catch of deer and elk in a " live trap" no more than that. Don't see anything there promoting the act?

Trappers in General and especially on this site are checked before being able to post or join. Trappers have a lot of laws and ethics to follow compared to most other activities.

Ford does not place a warning on thier F-150 trucks that says don't clamp an outboard to the tailgate and assume it can be used as a boat. There is a base line of integrity understood among people to do things properly. Heck we all drive down the 2 lane highways passing people going the opposite direction everyday at 60 plus MPH. There must be some assumed integrity ..... right? I cannot see a fella in Tennessee reading this post and then yelling to his wife in another room " I'm headed to home depot gotta buy some parts to build a giant trap. We are driving to Colorado this weekend to catch us some elk"

However, I've been wrong about a lot of stuff in life, maybe there would be a mass exodus ot future elk trappers descending upon the rocky mountain states!

What the heck is the big deal about cage trapping deer? Wisconsin has been doing it for years! The local municipalities make large wooden traps, catch whitetails, transfer them to transfer cages, and haul them to designated butcher shops. The DNR or some other government branch pays for the butchering and the meat is given to the poor. I'm not sure if they do this anymore because I think more people are using shooters, but they used to be pretty popular in some of my areas!

Mr. "Short Track"

Bait is a concoction of so much stuff in such bizzare quantites stirred up like some sort of witches brew and then poured on the ground.

Seeds, corn, oats, honey, mollasis, karo syrup, salt, koolaide packets, etc etc. simmered in a pot to melt everthing together and poured into a 5 gallon bucket to transport. Then poured right on the ground and dug in with a shovel. It's the craziest baiting routine I've ever seen. Doubful you could set this where there are black bears. A Bear would get caught and destroy that to get out.

Anyway I would prebait with corn for a month before setting this to trip. Make sure all the deer and elk go in and out comfortably knowing it's safe for a while. Then you can catch lots of them much easier when it is set to trip. No different the bushpigs in Africa or wild hogs in America

Exactly how can a calf be chipped "in utero"? I am usually pretty good at using GOOGLE to track down research on just about any subject. I can find nothing about attaching a chip to any mammal "in utero". Can you provide a citation to any description of how this is done? How is the chip activated after the birth of the calf?

The mother gets a chip. She also has one placed in the uterus. So both are active and always moving with each other. The chip is not direcrtly implanted into the cafe my bad for improperly explaining it. I don't take part in this other then talking to them every now and then when they use my property to trap them. Anyways once the mother gives birth the chip in the uterus comes out no longer tacking with the chip in the mother. This is how they know she has given birth so then it's time to go implant a chip into the new born cafe. Sorry about all that.

Ron, here’s a link to one of the primary telemetry companies and shows how the unit works. The one tied to birthing to send them out to tag the calves can be activated by temp or activity change. Cool stuff makes me miss radio telemetry work, though not my low pay scale back then! Lol!
