Seems like I saw something about using Liquid Smoke for trapping coons. Is it used as a call lure in the vicinity of DPs? And is it mixed w/the cat food as DP baits? Would appreciate anyone's sharing their knowledge on this topic.

I mix some with my cat food for coons. Not much though, it can be very overpowering, to the point it's all you smell. Add a tiny amount, way less than hand you think you'll need, give it a good stir/shake and smell to see what you think.

You can use It both ways. Mixed with some other type bait or as a trailing scent.

Most of the bear hunters I know use it around their baits.

Might be better to put it in a squirt bottle. I use 50% honey and 50% imitation vanilla in a squirt bottle to squirt in the vicinity of my DPs. i am going to try adding liquid smoke to it.
Liquid smoke is pretty potent, so I don't want to get a negative response from a coon who gags on it before he cleans out the bait and pulls the "lever of possession".

I use smoked tar at my bear baits. Use a brush. Spread it on trees. Coons galore. They climb all over the tree. Based on camera pics. Many pics of bears standing up and rubbing on the tree. Hair stuck all over on it.

If you go to the land trapping archives and look up baiting coons. I ran liquid smoke in coon feeders for two seasons with a lot of camera action on the bait stations. Liquid smoke and dog food was my go to. You can’t use too much. It won’t shy them away. It was my go to draw. It doesn’t just attract coons either. I applied a bottle to a bag of cat food generally by the end which baited a lot of dps.

It has little staying power however. It's alcohol based. Smoke oil lasts longer

I agree with that for sure. It lasts long enough to bring them into baits usually the first night it would get hit. If I was doing it again and targeting Coons I would use smoke oil found on FandT etc. to make the bait I used in my dps.

Wade FYI your bucket feeder liquid smoke thread is one I reread each summer. Now that coon prices are in tank if there are buyers anywhere coon by volume is only way to seriously trap them and hopefully cover gas money. I have two sweet corn farmers that expect me to trap coon on their ground. Feeders back in woods behind the properties has been a game changer for me.
Excellent thread, you did a great job of letting us follow along and join in when we could. Great thread.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Jim it sure is a way to knock a pile of them out fast. I wish I’d known then what I know now when I was dropping them off carcass for $16-20 a head. I’d went bigger and harder.
