I live in OH, and a badger(and bobcat) are the only animals on my bucket list to trap or shoot, so i'm looking for someone out West to help make this happen. Not looking for a handout, I can pay whatever, but would like to help on a line this winter, and keep(buy) a hide once an animal is caught.

I'm an honest patriot looking for an adventure, nothing more, nothing less. Just looking for a badger to check off the list.

I can provide traps, baits, whatever, just let me know whats needed.

Thanks,

Orion

You just need to load up and head west. Lots of places in western Kansas to trap.

Everything the left touches it destroys

They are the easiest critter to trap. They seem to be getting far and in between here, sure not as many as we used to have.

You can catch diggers in most coyote sets so I'd study public land availability in the Great Plains or Inter-Mountain West, check out what out-of-state resident trapping licenses are like, and head west...

Wait 'til you gotta dig 4 feet down in a sand hill to find one you caught.

That or you pull the trap chain thinking its a rear foot and it’s not, it’s amazing how fast your heart can pump and your legs move. grin
Welcome to the site, and check the archives there is some good info in there about trapping different animals.

I wish Michigan didn't needlessly screw up the non resident laws a couple years ago. The area I trap in northern Michigan is loaded with both and a nice short drive from Ohio. I suppose out west will be a bigger adventure for you though.

IDW speak for Pawnee but yeah he probably knows a dozen men with sections and sections they would love to have trapped. The irrigated alfalfa guys might actually buy you beer to shoot prairie dogs and trap badger.

To catch a badger you have to set in a area where there are badger. If on location they are easy to catch. Look for digs is the best advise I can give you. Grass and crop edges by grass are the best locations from what I have seen. They can and do move so fresh digs are what you need. You can catch them in about any trap or snare. I have caught them in baited foothold sets, trail set footholds, body grip boxes, body grip trail sets, snares over holes, trail set snares and baited cage traps. Most people don't target badger. The fur will be the best in early spring. A badger taken in Feb or March is as good as they get.

Yup, some good information right there.

They seem to like hill tops in crop fields, as well as around old buildings and irrigation well / pivot pads. Anywhere there may be a concentration of mice.

How crazy of an adventure are you looking for? I'm feeling pretty crazy with low fur prices this year and the first time in a few years I don't have my head buried in a book. I've had people from a few different states come and trap. I believe I will have my buddy Matt returning from Indiana this year again. He was looking for the two species you mention and caught both his first year here. I get excited when someone wants to catch badger I try to keep them out. This year will be his fourth trip here. I ask how crazy you are feeling because when Matt comes to town so does the rain, sleet, and every once in a while he brings the snow drifts.

Thanks for all the responses. Never even thought of public land, so I'll start doing some homework.

WadeRyan,

The crazier the better, lol. I'll remember a challenging trip a lot longer than an easy trip. What time of the year does he usually come out there?

So far I took off the end of November like the 28th- December 12ish? I'm not sure how many days he'll be here but he usually comes for 10. I work in healthcare so it's always a toss up but I generally don't take any time off the rest of the year so the four other people that can do my job are pretty good about covering me. I've covered all the fun they've had this year.

I'm in healthcare as well, so I get it. I sent-in a request for a brochure for Nebraska to get a better idea of the area. I may try to do a late doe antelope hunt(January) at the same time if I can figure everything out. If that doesn't pan out though, would love to tag along with you guys.

Seeing this is fairly new thread. I got call today from a cemetery they have one digging under tombstones and holes in general. Place is in country no houses around but corn/bean fields next to it but the cemetery is in the church's property/connected to their parking lot for their regular services. I've struck out last 3 badger jobs so hesitant even taking this one. I do have a good amount of new cages I could try though. I have caught 3 in fur season in footholds. Might just sell them on getting rid of their ground squirrels.
