This is how we do ours. 54 inch balage rounds wrapped in a tube. Feed about 30 a day in the winter. Less when we have pasture.

I'm sure glad I don't have your feed bill LOL. Out west wrapping keeps the weather our and allows the inside to cure even if it was a little "tough" at baling time.

Do you have to dry a wind row down really well to do it that way?

1600 lbs. for 80 days and 7 ewes is 2.8 lbs. of hay per ewe per day. What size or breed are your ewes? I am asking as I am buying small squares right now for our son and dtr-in-law and we will winter about 20 100-120 lbs. ewes and ewe lambs.

No we don't even want it dry. Probably about 30 percent moisture. We do some dry because we make grass fed cheese from one herd. Those cows can't have fermented feed so we do dry for them.

Ok I am on the same page now you are making milk and cheese and the only thing I half way no how to do is make beef.
As far as that "spicy" cheese does it taste bad or you would just need a whole new set of licenses to sell it?

A couple of contract bailing outfits from Lancaster County that do those big bails of straw here. They sit all winter out in the weather without any plastic wrap and get picked up in the spring. I have heard that they are being used to grow mushroom in mushroom farms in Avondale PA...but I can't confirm that.

One of the big outfits out here has steamer set ups that set the moisture content to what ever the customer wants. They bale in the middle of the day and put up some nice hay.
