So I got a five gallon bucket full of these split rings for free, used some on trapline last year to connect cable stakes to traps, but I used two on each one and had no issues.

I am not overly confident in one split ring holding a bigger coyote pumping on my set up. Reason im not I guess is I used some on some wire gate levers and they eventually pulled apart and failed. There is a considerable amount of pressure on gate levers though. So what do you do? Is one split ring sufficient? I have other options that work, but would like to use these if they will hold up also.

I've used them on coyote traps with drags, connecting 10' of chain to the drag.No problems, some say weld them or wire them shut ,I didn't but it's probably not a bad idea

Been using them for years and never had a problem even with coyotes pushing 50 lbs. Also held 2 different black bears in the 90 to 100 lb. range.

Yote I’ll post a pic when I get home tonight from work of what can happen when you use them. It ended my usage except for coon traps.

Interested in the picture RickA. I am surprised how strong they are. Pulling out a cable stake with the truck they did not break, the cable did.

There's too many quality issues with split rings for me. If you don't know the source you won't know if the ones you have are soft or hard.

if you have any doubt put two, better to have more holding power than not enough especially if you have a lot of them

this a video I made with an almost 700 lb. Suzuki 750 King Quad at full throttle. Yes the split ring did start to bend but I doubt a 50 lb coyote on a 12” chain could do this.

I agree. I've had both and they looked identical. I don't know how you would know the difference by appearance so I just don't trust them.

I would use them. When in doubt use two. Coyotes aren’t some supernatural being, they’re a 35-50 lb dog, nothing more.

I've got a small spit ring for keys that makes me laugh and feel like a real whimp when I try to put a single key on it.
Those big split rings hold well but double them up to reduce the pull/force on just one. grin

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Had a big 40ish pound coyote in a 550 with that on it when I went to remove the trap from his foot it fell off the chain! That’s when I quit using them!

RickA, do you think he was able to wedge the swivel into the split portion of the ring?

I've had 2 failures with them, one with a paw hold, one with a CR. Yes Archery that's excatly what happened both times. Now I use 30d s hooks I bend myself. not welded so I can open them and switch out.

Common sense catches alot of fur..

Thanks everyone, I think I have my verdict as I obviously went into this with little confidence in the rings, but also have had no issues with two holding just fine. I think some will go in the pickup as a option but two will be used if I decided to use them. Since they were free I dont need them costing me 80$ on a dog with a trap attached to him. If that happens they will be for sale to those whom like to use them lol.

This was an especially aggressive coyote when I arrived at the set. I think he was able to work the chain Chain between the two parts and that’s why it failed. I do think that for the most part they will work and if a guy is smart and uses two, they can be useful. I just decided to move them all to my coon traps to forego any future problems. I will say when I started to remove the trap from this coyotes foot and it came off in my hand, I about crapped myself because when I dispatched this animal it was a bit of a rodeo!

I went whole hog on them one year I bought 200 from a very reputable trap supplier and attached pogos to evèry thing i set that year with them . Luckily i didnt lose any critters . When i started pulling traps i just wrapped the chain arond the handle of my maddox and pried them out of the ground . The vast majority of them could pull a 2" pogo out of clay but 2 out of about 150 unwound like they were made of number 9 whire . I immediately removed them from anything i set dryland .

I've never used them but only because i trap a lot of public lands where theft can be a problem. I don't want to make any easier for them
