Use the long chain and attach it to a basketball sized rock. Even if the chain and rock don’t get hung up the sheer weight of the rock will wear the critter out in a hurry and it won’t go far. Plus a good size rock leaves obvious drag marks that are easy to track.

I use an extension cable (3/32 like snare cable) with a small loop on both ends. Wrap it around a tree, loop it through the hole and do the same to the end of your trap chain. Much cheaper and lighter than using just chain. But also, don't underestimate what a drag can do. You can always wire the trap's chain straight to a nearby log or fallen branch. My first coyote was caught with a trap wired to an 8ft tree branch.

Well fellas I will tell ya what I did. First I don't have the $$$ now for chain. I used 1/8 cable wired to a tree and - in another set I used it wired to a limb in a brush pile. made my cables 20 ft. I know your gonna ask why so long. (A) I really wanted them long so the dogs can get hung up in the smaller trees round the anchor. (B) You wrap up a cable around a good sized log or tree it gets shorter really quick. (C) when done I can use em on my beaver downing sets.
worked like a charm this morning... Just thought I would let you fellas know it worked well

I like to pre-hook 10' drag chain. When I make a catch, I know they will be close. I know it takes a bit more time to hide the chain but it is also a huge advantage on remakes in good locations. Just put the trap back in the same bed and hide the chain again. This works very well on wood line field edges. Critter works set, gets caught and heads for cover and out of sight. Set location not torn up but still has some residual smell in the area. Easy remake. I have had some critters almost tie knots in the chain and get in some of the dangdest tangles you can imagine but rarely find an empty trap.

If they get caught up too close to a tree they can use that tree to push off of and free themselves from the trap. I believe that it is better to use a shorter chain. A drag is probably better but could present the same problem. Its all a gamble because we don't know what is going to happen when they try to flee. I just don't know if I like a long chain because you also have to hide the chain which would require more work which requires more time. My final thought is to definitely go with a smaller chain. If an animal can free itself from your trap by pulling on a tree I would be more concerned with the trap rather than chain length.
Wish I had more time to trap....

In mud short chain will mud up imo In rocky ground it will be great and have no more damage to a foot than anything. Long chains give a critter a chance to to lay out of the mud and water. Short chains they fight until you get there long grass I see a disadvantage to long chains because swivels fouling . But it's a personal choice unless state requires . There is other reason imo for long chains it's a choice let keep it that way. Freedom of choice is a good thing
