Well i have been back from Tularosa New Mexico for a few days. Had the pleasure of taking 3 days of trapping lessons from Mr James Lucero. All i can say is WOW! I was taught some true old time wolfer ways. That is exactly what I went to him for ! We went and made sets about 3 or 4 miles from his house, on BLM land. Also went on some private land. I got to see alot of his old stomping grounds! Also learned 6-7 trap set that are NOT in any of his books! I really like the bobcat sets he showed me, they are NOT in any books of EVER be shown anywhere. Mr Lucero is also plaining to write another book. Its will be gear toward = Cattle, Sheep, and hard to catch and spooky coyotes. Mr Lucero is also going to start giving afew lessons again! He will be charging 1000 dollars for 3 days . I can tell you that it is WELL worth the money! His phone number is = 1 575 585 6314 Please keep in mind Mr Lucero is 85 years old. So speak clearly on the phone. If anyone has any questions on = Where to stay? What to bring? or anything else feel free to PM me anytime.

That would be fun.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

I would really like to meet him. Definitely would like to try his lures. His book doubled my catch at least.
If I could get free of my job I would do the personal instruction in a minute.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

Wow, thanks for sharing. Taking instructions from him would be a hoot.
I learned a lot from his books. Used his lures back in the day with good success. Never realized until recently he was still selling some.
Again, thanks for sharing.

You (we) are the only ones that prevent those trips. And asking loved ones for "gifts cards" for birthday or Christmas or anniversary gifts, towards his tuition could help as well. I was surprised several yrs ago at how many "on the line' instructors offer a gift card/layaway system.
Putting in for Vac at work is also imperative. I finally had to tell my boss...."look, these offers only come certain times of the year, and i'm not getting any younger......"
When i was self employed i just had to schedule the work around my trips, to conventions or wherever.

As per request. Here is alittle more info. You can stay in Tularosa or Alamogordo NM . Alamogordo is about 13 miles from Mr Lucero's house. There is a Motel 6 that gives a discount on 3 days or more stay. Its 40 dollars a night. Good bed . Microwave and Mini Fridge There are more expensive motels near by. Food? With this Covid -19 drive threws onl open. But Walmart in Alamogordo is open . Must wear mask. IF you want to trap after you take lessons from James Lucero, their is Millions of acres of BLM land.

You Betcha Matt!

Lucero’s JL#1, Coyotero, & Winter Wolf were my top three producers from a lineup of over 20 proven lures last season.

Here is the contact information and books he has available.

I really enjoyed his book "Master Wolfer" and it made me rethink the actual placement of lure at a set. His idea of placing a small amount of "catch dirt" over the bait in a hole is very smart and is proven to catch wise canines.

I may have to look into his personal instruction myself.

Tejas,
I spoke with Mr Lucero last evening and sent him a check for the the 3 lures mentioned and the MW book. He was very pleasant to talk to, and very happy to chat, and obviously a wealth of information. I asked him in what type of sets he used each of the 3 lures, and I’m not sure he understood my question, as he kept answering “bobcat, coyote and fox” lol. Care to elaborate?
Matt

ST - Thanks for sharing. I met Mr. Lucero years ago- I forget which convention. He was great to talk to and took time to answer tons of questions. He gave a demo on coyotes. Thanks again.

I sent my order for all three lures today. I got his master wolfer book last year. I asked in my letter with enclosed check if he would sign it. He sent me a signed copy. About a week ago I got a hand addressed envelope with a flyer for his books and one for his lures. I sent the order, I like doing business like this. No calls, e-mails, or catalogs just send a letter with what you want and the money. Your goods will arrive promptly. He has great products and he is as honest as they come. It is a pleasure to do business with a man like him.

Talked to a guy in Montana the other day. About alltuitude sickness. Thought it might be woth mentioning IF you come to Tularosa New Mexico. You might want to come a few days early to trap or take lessons. Alamogordo is 4400 ft and Carrizozo is 5500 ft and up the road CloudCroft is 8600 ft . So give this some thought if you are coming from sea level or 600 ft like I did. Took me a few days to get used to it

Sounds like a great place. One of my favorite places to camp is at 8,000 ft. I went for two days to Colorado in July and went to just at 12,000 feet. I got a little loopy and sure was out of breathe. Ha! My house is right at 580 feet so I can relate.

Got any pictures?
