I may check the next day after initial setting but never daily after that. You gotta let your traps work.I also will pull a lot of the traps after the second check and just leave a couple to take beaver that come in or if I want otter.
Had 2 beaver today like that 4 days after I cleaned out the residents. If there are beaver nearby that you may not know about they will come in once they check the territorial castor mounds and find out the residents arent defending their territory anymore.

Ive never trapped beaver any other way than castor mound sets. I utilize drowning sets. I also shave the bark off some sticks that i see them chewing up and place them at the top of the mound with the exposed sides facing the water. Add a little beaver castor and ive had great success. To get them to go where i want them i place sticks in a v shape to funnel them to the mound. Usually pretty wide in the water so they dont go around. MAKE SURE THEY HAVE NO BARK ON THE STICKS BECAUSE THEY WILL CARRY YOUR STICKS OFF!!! Then i poke a small stick in the water between the trap and the mound so that when they get close to the mound it pokes them in the chest/neck area and they put their feet down and step right into the trap. Ive used this for years trapping rivers and lakes

Thanks for all the info and ideas. I only have half a dozen beaver traps currently, so I think I will be placing a order to MTP for some more traps. That way I can set this one heavy and also thin out another colony across the road where I believe these ones came from.

In spring season our otter is closed. In fall I set almost all blind sets as I catch both.\

If I am targeting some beavers I like food appeal in the fall. Some lures were mentioned already. Fresh aspen sticks peeled work as good as anything in the fall. Poplar oil or similar lure adds some draw.

Where ya have drowning depth water & good visual area for beaver to see just make a fake trail with fresh bait. Peel some bark off a few of the bait sticks to look being worked. Bait just needs to be on trail so beaver can see it. Lure is optional. Popular bud oil is good attractant here in PA. Use castor only at mound sets

TILL THAT DAY.....

Update... Day 1 is in the books. 3 beaver, 1 small, 1 medium, and 1 large. Had 6 330s blind set all empty. Had 3 castor mounds, all empty although they were all over one of them just missed the trap. And 3 food sets, all connected. Peeled sticks with a little Woodchipper. [Linked Image]
