I've been using dps lately, since there's nothing easier to set, and because I have to be fairly specific with my catches. But when I remove the coon, I end up leaving some of his blood at the trapsite. I wonder if his blood may spook other coons?

I would suggest to remove big spots of blood at any set. Blood down a dirt hole is a good thing though

Won’t hurt a thing. Even with a canine set, as long as there isn’t a big pool of blood right in the trap bed it’s not gonna cause a problem

I’ll take it a step further. I’m guessing I trapped 30+ coons off one single trap without ever moving it. It had blood all over and a coon even got tore up by some coyotes. Just kept catching. It was next to a deer feeder so it had plenty of attraction.

I will have to disagree about the amount of blood at a set. When I was live trapping fox and coyotes I got 50% more catches at remakes then when I was fur trapping and killed the animal at the set. If I had to kill a feral dog at a set that set went dead for awhile.
I know that Robert stuns the coyote at the set then chokes It down so no blood at a set. Not sure what his % of catches at remakes Is but I bet It's more then when he would shoot the coyote at the set.Probably not a big deal with coon and other non targets.

For the past 5 or 6 seasons I have changed my dispatch method to one with little or no blood. I had issues with blood after dispatch prior to changing. I never caught a second coon in a trap. I could catch one on a great trail and then nothing for weeks. As soon as I changed my dispatch method mid season I had multiple catches per trap and have since. I can share it with you in a pm if you want. Anyone else for that matter too.

My remakes used to go stagnent for a while when i shot every thing then i changed up to a bloodless method and it just made them hotter even on coyotes ive got one set this year that has caught four coyotes looks like a bomb went off there but still keeps working got one set that caught a coyote three days ago and a big tom cat this morning as far as coon have had remakes catch on dps with bloodless method but didnt have real good luck shooting but we dont have a real strong population here like other places

I've been kicking dirt over, too. I caught a coon yesterday in a dp and kicked dirt over the blood puddle. This morning I had a possum within a few feet of the puddle. Thanks so much for being there, guys. The info pool here at trapperman is priceless.

I bypass the blood issue for the most part. A 3' piece of hockey stick between the eyes works pretty good. After you stun them, put your foot on the rib cage and and push the air out of the lungs and hold it for couple min. No blood.

Gray beard, I usually use that method. Sometimes when I’m on a tight schedule I go forthe .22 though. In the heart, not the head. Way less blood that way. Seems like they just bleed everywhere with a head shot, a well placed heart shot doesn’t produce nearly as much blood.

B, do you use the little CB caps? That is my dispatch round.

No I use long rifle, but I may try a heart shot with the cb caps. I have used them before but that was before I switched to heart shots. I quit using them because three times they bounced right off a coyotes head, once on a fox and once on a coon and that soured me on em for good. Then again that was out of a revolver with a 2” barrel, one might have better luck with them out of a longer barreled gun.

I've had trouble with heart shots using shorts (hollow points). If it hits a rib it won't penetrate. Went back to using long rifles.

Bob, a CB cap in one ear will turn the brain into scrambled eggs and they rarely exit.
