Got a buddy has had eight chickens killed in two nights. Some have heads pinched off, one has had the breast eaten, and one had tail feathers pulled out, but most just looked to be killed and untouched. After consulting google and another friend a mink has been put at the top of the list of suspects. I have had no experience with mink, but when I look up anything on them 90% of what I find are water “blind sets” or pockets. What do you guys recommend I try? I wanna know baits, traps, types of sets, any and everything you guys can tell me. This guy really wants/needs this to stop sooner than later. Thanks in advance!

I'd figure out how it was getting in and trap there. Seems like the chickens are a good bait.

Raccoons are very famous for this also.. Both can be caught in cage traps..

I have caught mink in cage traps with a nest of golf balls and mink lure in the back of the cage.

once you go trap, you never come back

It sure sounds like mink. At times they seem to kill chickens just for enjoyment. We have taken many with 110's in blind sets around the coop, but others have had good success with cage traps and fresh bait and some lure.

IF YOU DON'T HAVE PETS IN THE AREA TO BE CONCERNED ABOUT A #1 1/2 CS WILL BODY GRIP CATCH A MINK AND ALSO PAD HOLD A COON. MAKE A COUPLE BLIND SETS OUTSIDE THE COOP WITH THE TRAP JAW RIGHT AGAINST WALL OF THE COOP. BE SURE TO STAKE SOLID ENOUGH SO IF IT IS A COON THAT THE TRAP ISN'T GONE WHEN YOU COME BACK. MAKE A SLIGHT DEPRESSING FOR THE TRAP TO SET IN MAYBE COVER IT WITH A FEW LEAVES BUT I HAVE NOT NOTICED MINK OR COON TO BE REALLY EXPOSED TRAP SHY.

Hmmmm. How are you setting a 1.5 coil to body grip a mink? Have any pictures of a mink being body gripped by a 1.5 coil? I’m not saying it couldn’t be done, maybe with a head catch, but I will say that I have caught hundreds of mink in 1.5 coils and not a single one was ever body gripped, all caught “normal” foothold style. Maybe I just need to catch a few more hundred to figure it out... I like that idea.

I always put a 120 with a pan, over the holes in the wire, even had to wire tie one 6 ft up one time.

Have caught coon and mink and opossum and feral cats.

Sounds like raccoon. The only way to cut down on loss is to lock up your chicken in a coop at night. I don't lose chickens at night, but do to free ranging during the day which I expect 30 % loss mostly to hawks and whatever else takes a liking to them.
