Great Pictures! I enjoy seeing those caribou! The burnt hide set is interesting. I may have to give that a try sometime. Where I am coyotes are pretty scarce, but a couple have been seen over the last few years. I wonder how soon we will have an influx.

Looks like things are picking up on your line. You sure get your sleds into some sticky situations. Good luck out there!

Kinda new to the wolf trapping game. But trying to learn as much as I can.
Do you really use those rebar stakes to hold a wolf? Just seems like wolf could/would dig that up or pull it out very easy.

I have a couple AK #9’s I’ve set (so far wo luck) in SE AK. But alway have to keep my set within reach of a tree or large log to anchor to. Just driving in a rebar stake would be much easier!

Thank you!

Greeting Trappers. Did a power trip out to the line yesterday. A friend dispatched one a wolf in one of my traps a couple days ago and left it on the ground. I didn't want the ravens or the other wolves to get to it so off I went. 8 hours, 100 miles on the truck and 84 miles on the 19 Expedition 900 Sport. Hauled a load of bait out with me and pulled a groomer back to the road. [Linked Image]

15 below out there but the sun is coming over the mountain now which is awesome. Kind of hard to see when driving right into it but a welcome sight just the same. [Linked Image]
[Linked Image]The overflow was rising fast in some spots so had to chop out a few #9's. I always wait a day or two too long.
Got the gray female wolf hanging in the shop thawing and time to modify some traps for a guy and build 9's for the rest of the week

Fishinak... I use 18" rebar stakes on my ridge sets in frozen ground. I would not use an 18" stake in your country. There is some experience wolf trappers down there that are more familiar with your conditions. I am new to wolf trapping myself and still learning everyday, don't wanna steer you the wrong direction. You are always better with a solid anchor like a tree IMHO though. Good luck and be safe.

This happened the other night coming back to the cabin after a long day

After a little axe work, got the ol WT back on it's track and drove it out. This is the hole the next day [Linked Image]
My buddy that shot my wolf did the same thing on up the canyon. Cutting corners and driving too fast. He was luck to have a couple guys with him as he doesn't carry a bit of extraction gear with him, Not an axe, not even a shovel...He got knocked out and went to the hospital with a concussion. Doesn't remember the day at all. This is the hole he broke into.. [Linked Image]
You can stay home where it is kind of safe or get out and live life to it's fullest... Use your head, approach every situation with caution and Be prepared for the worse...

I hate shell ice.
Prudent to carry shovel, axe, rope come along, chainsaw etc when going far in where you cant walk out.
People nowadays depend on the new fangled satellite stuff to call for help, lol.
Chainsaw and come along or two can save a lot of grief if you get slushed.
Stay safe out there Howler.

Wow. Glad it worked out as well as it did for him...could have been much worse.

Yes live life in full gallop, steady in control around tight turns indeed , I know that well in driving anything animal or machine animal.....and always be prepared. Done this all my life.

Great country as usual , always love seeing the dimension of the land and its animals. Nice wuff , too .

Thanks for the share, JR.

I hate it when the creeks and rivers water level drops so much after freeze up. Sure keeps you on pins and needles at times. I have no doubt by this time you have become an expert at self recovery in those situations. I certainly have learned from your post and have supplemented my recovery gear with items you have mentioned over and over.

And I thought it was such a pain in the butt to get bogged down in deep snow. I guess either way it happens, it is, but never had to deal with those ice flows and cave in's before. I like your attitude about living life; it mirrors mine. I'm not wolf trapping this year and I miss it. Fun to see you get some!

Heading out to the line this morn. Had a practice run last week with nothing for the stretchers. We did get some line cleared out though and a 40 mile loop finished. Got a heck of a partner out on the trapline, and she cooks and plays cribbage.[Linked Image]

Picked up a couple moose sheds [Linked Image]

Didn't really see much for sign except for the same two lynx around the frozen MB750's. One big tom was eating the bait when we showed up and ran off. Stacey thought that was pretty cool. She still doesn't like the overflow [Linked Image]

Put the new Polaris Profloat skis on the Expedition and adjusted the suspension yesterday .

Heading back out this morning. Good luck and be safe trappers..
