I tried to sell this coyote to a fur buyer that advertises that they buy carcass coyotes. He offered me $2. I took it back, as I couldn't part with it for $2. The buyer said it has a bad neck. Can you explain what makes this neck bad? I'm trying to learn, & I don't notice any significant problems with hair on the back of it's neck. It was from New Years Eve. Is it unusual to have bad neck hair on a Dec yote? I asked him what he meant by bad neck hair, & I didn't get what I felt was a clear answer that I could learn from. I had it de-burred & nicely combed. He mentioned something about ticks likely having damaged the back of its neck hair, but I don't see any ticks on it. Thanks for the advice on this female's neck hair.

I understand rubbing, & so I asked him if he felt it was rubbed (I don't think it's badly rubbed). He made it sound like rubbing wasn't the issue.

Skin it and finish it then you will get $20 and only have another hour into it.

Wish I had more time to trap....

Neck hair should be a couple inches long. Looks like gaurd hair is missing.

The neck looks a bit loose and open in the guard hair and the underfur looks weak.If the rest is good from the neck back its worth more than $2.Hard to say from the pics what the whole skin looks like.
Burrs were in the neck right?

The burrs (not very many) were on the neck. Maybe I combed it too aggressively.

I just went in the garage & took this picture:

My dad thinks it looks like a beauty, & he might home tan it for his house.

I'm trying to learn from this.

I thought I was decent at evaluating fur, apparently not.

I didn't expect a carcass animal to bring high dollar, but we were surprised it got downgraded so severely due to this neck.

In the first couple of pics, the neck looks a bit open/thin, but it certainly isn’t a “bad” neck in my opinion. It is the early start of a bad neck but has a long way to go to be called BAD.

Perhaps I should send you a coyote with a bad neck to show your buyer. I wonder what he would call it. LOL

Defibately more than a $2.00 coyote in my opinion, even on the carcass.

Looks a little "wooly" and guard hairs seem thinned, but nothing I would call bad , I've seen much worse. Find a new buyer, and learn how to put up fur; finished coyote fur is well worth the extra effort.

I'm glad I didn't part with it for $2. That offer was an insult in my opinion. I must have caught him in a bad mood. If I don't do the put-up myself next time, I think we'll take it to Wiebke.

Who offered you $2.00 for that yote?
I got $2.00 for a coyote I shouldn't have skinned.
That coyote Is starting to break It's what normally happens at this time of year. Other then the neck It looks like a pretty good coyote to me.

His name was Guy.
When I inquired to him on the $2 offer, the thing he seemed to focus on was the bad neck hair.
He has the right to reject or offer whatever he needs to offer, in order to make $. I guess I was caught off guard, and so I appreciate your input on what he might have meant by 'bad neck.' This seems to be what yotes look like in my area, I don't know. 'Guess I will just focus on nuisance trapping.

I guess I missed the part where It was a carcass coyote. That will also bring the price down.

Keep on trapping til you have scratched your “itch”. Some of the yotes in your area probably will be starting to break down, but not all by any means. Good luck and keep on having fun! That is what really matters.

Thanks but it is hard to have fun as frustrated as I was yesterday. I'm probably going to focus on my own 130 acres, as well as nuisance calls.

The best way to learn, is to put that coyote up and see what it looks like finished. A buyer that has looked at thousands pelts, sees things differently than an individual that hasn't. Any chance to learn should be taken.

I thought about that, but imagine how high my frustration would have been if I had spent all the time skinning/fleshing/stretching only to later find out the buyer didn't want it

How do you think a fur buyer learns?? You had a perfect opportunity to learn a free lesson and understand a little more about fur. Even if the buyer still says no good, you have learned why!

Thanks. Based on your input (& feedback from the buyer the other day), I'll ponder/research this so I have a better understanding of what constitutes whether a coyote is worth trying to sell. If I don't self tan it, maybe I'll take this to Wiebke for their use & 'hands on' advice.

Your buyer is "skinning" you.

The only constant in trapping is change so keep learning.
