One of the best tricks I learned from a top cage trapper in the Arizona desert, was the use of peanut butter crackers inserted inside a 2 liter plastic bottle and wired to the back of the trap.
After a few days, mice would climb the cage wire and go inside the bottle to eat the bait, however when they tried to get out, they would find they were trapped inside, due to the slick surface of the bottle. The 'cat of course would see the live mice when he looked inside, the mice of course would see the cat. . .and panic. . .
Apparently, no self respecting 'cat could pass up live jumping, squealing prey.
He sure caught a lot of 'cats !
