I run some this yr with dry catfood. Then some with ground up skipjack salted. It's so loud fishy smelling. It work the best for me. I did catch some on catfood. Not like on fish. I did set on sign most of the time.

I made up some of jabne’s catfood, molasses and jello mix last weekend. Put it out on sign and they cleaned up in one night. Good stuff

In my limited experience...use a sweet bait early in the season and a meat/ fishy type bait later...and like Beav said bacon type baits are tough to beat...think bacos.
Koolaid type of dry mixes have worked for me, as well as canned corn...with sweet cream corn being tops.
Just my take.

‘Just got some of ADC’s bait. It should work well for DPs around farm buildings.

Then I thought, what the heck, let’s see what I can do with what I’ve already got. So I mixed a couple ounces or molasses with about 3 cups of small piece kitten food in a gallon plastic bag. Poured in a box of cherry jello and let the kitten food soak it up. I did the same thing with Kaatz’ Smokin Aces. And a 3rd batch of persimmon oil and kitten food.

Last week I picked some places coon tracks showed there was activity. Holy Buckets, Batman, EVERYTHING got worked HARD within 2 days. I have no idea if this stuff will continue to work during season, but for pre-baiting to locate groups and travel ways, I think I’ve found a start.

Next I’ll try it with cracked corn as prebaiting could get expensive. Molasses is cheap but only has mild odor—to me. The Smokin Aces and persimmon oil have stronger odor but could be expensive. All pre-baits, but especially the cracked corn mix will be raked into soft soil. This is a Ron Jones method that keeps them coming back when they can smell it but not find it.

I have caught about 20 coons with 24 dp traps in 2 days. In south Texas I only use corn. Because of the ant. It's about all that works down hwre

Might be over kill but I use a little of bit of each from the following. Dry cat foot, small white marshmallows and cheap sardines in oil. Cat food and marshmallows inside and a smear of sardines on the lip of the dp. Couple marshmallows on the ground for eye appeal and a drizzle of the sardine oil for a trailing scent.

Fruit Loops and Wildlife Research Hard Core. For the fishy thing, salmon dry cat food and some really loud shellfish oil. Coons love 2 things very well. Fishy or really sweet.

As I’ve previously posted (maybe on a different thread), our DNR doesn’t like prebaits that might attract and concentrate deer. The regs say no corn, grains or derivatives (flour) and no fruit or vegetables. This is restricted to the counties where chronic wasting disease has been found.

Okay, I tried the kitten food, Smokin aces / persimmon oil/ molasses and anise mixtures and found them to be mediocre when our season rolled around. Did better with calf starter with a couple drops on the DP rim of Moonshine or Smokin’ Aces. Banana Supreme held its odor and thus coon catching power much better.

In the past, I’ve used wool under the trigger but it got pulled out a lot. At the recommendation of Ron Jones, I used stiff fiberfill instead and I liked that better. A dollop of Banana Supreme on the fiberfill kept the mouse action to a minimum. Any left over after the season came out when I took out the fiberfill.

The locations I pre-baited, before having to pull the pre-baits, didn’t produce at all. A warden friend said distemper affects certain areas, mine included, leaving us with only very large coon. I think I got one small one all season. The vast majority were over 22 pounds. Of the last 10, I think the smallest was 4X. Apparently living in groups isn’t good when distemper is in town.

If you don’t live in an area of chronic wasting disease or DNR restrictions on prebaiting, or distemper in the flock, prebaiting does work. Murse/Wade Ryan proved that a couple years ago. He used liquid smoke and dog food. I’ve found liquid smoke oil is better than grocery store liquid smoke (in water) because it holds its odor much longer.
All in all, the prebait mixtures would have done much better if A) we didn’t have to contend with distemper and B) there were no chronic wasting disease restrictions in place.

Fruit loops , when i pass them in grocery store. I think they would be good. But I never heard anyone say they used them

Where do you get liquid smoke oil?

Bigfoot, Captain Crunch with a good sweet lure works too. The Wildlife Research Hard-Core is hard to beat for sweet lure. A few drops in the DP and a few above on a branch.

Hard to beat 'Floating (catfish) fish food' , but any dry (small pellet) dog or cat food, especially anything with salmon flavor, work extremely well.
You can use wet canned pet food or fish products like king mackerel , works great, unless you're in freezing conditions.
Horse feed with granulated molasses ? You bet !
Sweet ( kids) cereal isn't too bad and cheap enough from the Dollar stores and an 'off brand' or imitation.
All of it works, we just need a better market !

I have caught coon on generic lucky charms, and generic brand fruit loops. I also fattened a lot of mice. I bought some of ADC's dp bait, and caught more! It really seems to work. I put the trap in the center of the trail, and I only fill to the trigger.
