I wanted to set some coyote traps on a cleared pipeline, ground is way to rocky for an earth anchor. and I was going to try a tire set.

Well If your going to make a tire set just anchor to the tire and use that as a drag.

Well If your going to make a tire set just anchor to the tire and use that as a drag. I was fearful that would be too easy to pull, I guess I could use a large truck tire

A regular 16 or 18" truck tire with 8' chain between the tire and the trap will tire out a coyote In no time flat. If you think It's to lite just place a few rocks In side the tire.

I was fearful that would be too easy to pull, I guess I could use a large truck tire You must have some bad arse coyotes if thay can pull a regular sized car tire. Add some chain...about 8 or 10 feet.....coyote wont go anywhere. That said....why not just make a dirthole or flat set instead of toting a tire to the location? Yall make this too hard on yourselves.

I would assume he can drive down the pipe line so It shouldn't be a problem hauling what ever he needs. The tire can act as a drag and also a vocal point for what ever he's trapping.

I get that, but hauling a tire to the woods to trap coyotes......totally unnecessary. Unless he just wants to be able to say, "Hey...I caught a coyote using a car tire!"

I have used tires as drags. We had so me old truck tires by a nursery for trees and noticed tracks around them. We started using them for sets. Dirt hole on outside edge of tire. The coyotes drag them a very short ways. Sometimes just a few feet. We just leave them there and use them yearly.
Putting rocks in them is a great idea.

Make your own concrete drags from 1 gallon milk containers. Buy some Redimix Sakreet or such at the local lumber yard and mix with water, cut top off milk jug, add some old chain , wire, nails etc. to minimize crack separation and don't worry about a block splitting.......................... my take.......... the mike how do you attach?

A gallon jug of concrete seems like It might be a bit on the lite side for a drag. And the rounded surfaces would make It easier to drag.
But If you go that way just set a eye bolt In the concrete.
In stead of buying sakreet just go to some construction site or find some place where they are pouring concrete and you can get all you want for free.

I started using concrete blocks with 8 feet of chain this year actually because I hate driving stakes and main rationale was if I hooked up with a lion I didn’t want to spend half a day trying to find it. Haven’t hooked a lion yet this year but when I have with regular drags they can haul a trap a long ways before they get tangled enough to pull out and then you are just looking for a trap somewhere, real pain in the butt to find. I just use a carabiner to connect the chain through one of the holes in the cinder block. The added weight would be an issue if you were setting a lot of traps but I just run a few sets on private land all season for something to keep me entertained and I plan on leaving the blocks out there from year to year. The coyotes don’t go more than 30 feet. I’ve been worried about the blocks crumbling apart and maybe i’ll have to replace them every few years but they are newer and still pretty solid. The old tire idea mentioned above seems better. I think either a block or a tire would add a curiosity draw for most critters. do you think I could use cable to a concrete block?, I don't have much chain, but I have tons of cable for my conibears
