What's a good medium to preserve full skunk pods? I have some white lightening and vodka, but don't want to waste either if there's something better. I've tinctured skunk essence with peanut oil, but again I want to preserve the pods until I'm ready to use them.

Mr. Jameson, so I can leave the pods full to preserve? The alcohol is 100 proof corn liquor. At least that's what I was told. Would 100 proof vodka work?

I’d drain them and store the pods or grind them to make sweet skunk or freeze them. If you don’t grind the pods be careful if kept whole they expand when thawed if empty. The pods are tougher to poke if they harden up and dry out .

What's sweet skunk? I've heard the phrase before just don't know how to make it. I will drain them and grind up the empty pods. I've got some skunk cages set in town and I'm sure I will be picking up a few more in the near future.

Grind the pods and let them age for a year or more it takes a long time for them to breakdown they will turn black and a tar like paste will form on the pods, it will be like incense not as sharp of odor as fresh quill but a thicker odor that sticks in your nose like cigar smoke. Yep them pods crust over in a hard shell they leak when you stick them because of the angle of the needle were the fresh pods will seal that.

You forgot to tell him dangerous it is working with such toxic material.... lol I asked you a couple years ago how to make it (I had already made some up was curious what ur response would be) and you gave me some ring around the roses cow manure story some about caution and experience and danger and never did give an answer. I did get a laugh out of it though.

After a year or so, it becomes a nice mellow skunky ingredient I use in some of my lures.

I probably said they were volatile when talking about the tapped whole pods when not ground and how they expand when thawed out. You get 50 pods in a 1/2 gallon jar under pressure and loosen the lid them pods will come out faster then you can get the lid back on that jar. LOL try it some time. I always stuff my pods tight in the jar as they lose volume after the grinding.

Now y'all got me afraid to go out and milk those pods. I traded some empty skunk pods years ago from someone on here and still haven't done anything with them. It's got to have been several years now at least. Think I'll have to get out the haz-mat suit and my rain gear before I tackle them pods.

Just go outside on a windy day and hope for the best! LOL A quick poke on the dry pods might help some but the pressure needed to penetrate the harder pod is a problem often. The one sure fact no matter what you do you will stink and don’t think a latex will protect you if you get some quill on them.

[quote=Yes sir]The first one i did were some I got from ks skunk man(Mick) full pods already aged a couple years. Ground them full. Stunk to high heaven but man they made a great ingredient.[/quote
That sounds like a mess every once in a while I get a pod that did not empty all the way and get a blast of mustard I cannot imagine doing a batch of full pods, my hat is off to you sir.

Bob said I was either really tough or really ignorant or both. Lol It was one job I didn't need reminded to keep my mouth shut on. Though I'm pretty sure I could taste them by the time I was done anyway

How sweet it is, I always grind my pods empty. But get some that got plenty in them yet. Won't be long . I've been aging mine 2 years before using them. Seems about right. The whole town smells me in april.
Let me sugar coat this

Yes Sir I believe is experiencing a learning disability in grinding full pods. LOL If you do it again you just better check yourself into an asylum. what really worries me is I didn't think it was that bad Lol. But I will admit I haven't done it again though it made a great product. In my defense they were given to me that way and had been aging for several years and there wasn't any way to separate the pods and essence at that point.
