Ok, who has been messing with this enough to give good feedback?
Basically a long stake with a drowning lock on it. Attach your foothold or snare to the lock, set however needed, and when a catch is made, the beaver and lock head to the bottom of the rod and can't get back up to the surface. Like a snare set or a rat stool, only for beavers?
I have a.location that is begging for this set up, but I have zero confidence in just winging it and hoping it works...
Any input?

CF, I made a couple of these a while back. Used 1/2" rebar @ 5 foot lengths. Welded #9 wire <-shaped piece about a foot from bottom to keep it from spinning and help hold from beaver pulling up. Also wrapped and welded #9 wire near top for snare support. Put drowner slide on rebar b4 welding. Used these about 3 times and have caught beaver every time. I dipped these in brown F1...perfect od green color. Gonna make several more. Need about a dozen for beaver work I do.
These could be set up from a boat but Ive set them each time wearing chest waders. Pulling them from a boat might not be easy.

Very cool. Just a snare hooked on and lure on the stake/rod top to have them swimming around? Seems almost too good to be true. Got a job on a large flow and the water is deep, but the bottom is good for this type stake. I'm anxious to play a little cuz the job doesn't pay that good.

Ive used them 2 ways: I staked them in a deep run that had a pinch point with snare 2/3 submerged. I also wired a small piece of foam rubber near top of stake(above where the support wire is welded on amd above the water a few inches). I put lure on the foam rubber. Caught beaver both ways..

So to use a VERTICAL drowning system your going to need DEEP water right next to where your trap has been placed.

So to use a VERTICAL drowning system your going to need DEEP water right next to where your trap has been placed. Correct. Deep water and a very short snare. If I ever build anymore vertical submersion rods again, I’m going to build them longer. Probably 6, maybe as long as 8 ft. I’ll also put a handle near the top for retrieving it. In my opinion, this type of setup is best used out of a boat.

I can see this being more practical when using foot holds.

Very cool idea.
If you had a weight that was attached to the cable, and was hanging off the rebar on a heavy wire hook wrapped around the rebar about 3’ up from the bottom, so the weight would get pulled off easily, it would keep the beaver under more easily.

Works good. Just make sure the end of the drowning rod is stuck In The bottom not needed if ya slide about 35+ lbs weight down the rod. I had a steep 3' bank they were using that dropped into 20+ ft of water. I added about 35-40 lbs weight to the end of my drowning rod, then slide the rod into to water, DOUBLE staked it, then hung my 30" beaver snare and attached it to the slide lock. Worked like a charm.

I can see this being more practical when using foot holds. Seems to work well with snares. I havent used it enough yet, but have caught beavers. I have not tried to set this up from a boat...without getting out of boat. That could be a bit difficult to ensure proper anchoring.

I would think attaching a length or two of fresh popular to the pole above water could really add to such a set. Right at snare so as the approach to chew at water line the swim into snare.
