In a pinch i would consider 1/8" 7x19 cable. But, chain maybe cheaper

The main reason for chain on drags is the weight, forget the cable.

If I didn’t have any chain, and had to choose between blowing out a key location by pinning down a coyote to it, or preserving that location by putting the trap on a drag with some 1/8” cable, I’d take the cable every day. But you gotta realize that you will likely only use it once, as it will be all kinked up when you’re done. Obviously chain is a much better choice

And weight is not needed if you can pre-hook to local saplings or logs. I also only run a 6 foot chain or cable so that when a raccoon or bobcat climbs, it is only head high and easy dispatch. Not 10 feet up a tree making a difficult dispatch shot. I have read on here about guys having to climb a neighboring tree to dispatch or even chop it down. I am not going that route.
But I Trap old logging rds.

I have used 1/8th inch cable looped through 50# lb barbell weights for years in sandy conditions.
I run the cable through a piece if garden hose, where it goes through the center of the weight.
I personally haven't had a problem.
