The mealworms are freeze dried. I can't imagine they skin 'em to get the meat and sell the shells. It easier to sell just the shells, to hard to put on a board and flesh and stretch! JMO

Just for the fun of it I took a muffin tin with 6 compartments and put in, peanuts, white millet, meal worms, dog food, shell corn, and pigeon food just to see what goes first. No bread or Black sunflower seeds. Put out after dark, we will see in the morning. I am thinking of making some seed blocks, not suit blocks.

Our past time in the winter is watching the birds at our feeders. I purchased meal worm a few weeks ago. To my surprise they were only shells nothing inside. I had opened the package so I put a hand full on our feeder, the birds eat the shell. Is this normal? Do they use the shells as grit? I have lots of squirrels so I have to keep there food to a limit, they will set and eat all day. We have snow all the time but out winters are getting shorter IMO. Cold right now.
i think they are dehydrated and the guts are still in there my blue birds love them

Peel a fat skunk carcass in the middle of winter and hang it out for the birds they really work that thick layer of fat over when it’s cold.

Don't you have a P-e-t-skunk, sure hope they cannot read what happens. The good thing about birds is their body temp is so that the rabies is not transfered The Holstein pheasants sure love to land on those hanging carcases and seem to go for the liver first thing.

Had a Red-Tail hawk after a squirrel at my bird feeder this morning, the a couple of crow ran her off. Out neighbor sent us a picture of a Cooper's Hawk eating on chicken bones she put out for a feral cat.

Gary: We do not have Grackles in the winter. I have found that a lot of the mixed bird seed get left on the ground. The squirrel will eat the Black Sunflower Seed in a minute. But the red millet, milo and other grains get left for a long time. I have a rabbit comes in at night and feeds under the feeder. Just got 40# of just white millet. We don't usually have grackles in the winter either. For the last few days it's been common to see 20 to 30 at one time. They will clean out the feeder in 1 day.

Getting snow and wind tonight, I will have to get up early and shovel out for the ground feeder in the morning. Seed cakes are not working out for me. There is no advantage for me. JMO
