Skunk romance is around the corner!

I should start pulling down the traps, fixing bent up triggers, and making sure they're ready to go!

Anybody else getting ready? Raccoons are already making their presence known too!

Not a single skunk call yet in 2021. Should be hopping by now. Haven't even smelled any on the road.

Caught my first whiff on last Thursday. We're mostly running squirrels and raccoons at the moment.

Caught five in one week in town. That was a week or so ago. Getting more squirrel calls then anything else right now. I expect the coon calls will pick up soon. Judging from the number of skunk sightings, looks like it will be a bumper crop year for young ones. Fingers crossed. LOL

The only skunk odor around here is the odor drift from my storage buildings so far....

Skunks have been "pitching' woo" in South Texas since early and throughout January. Before this highly unusual wintry blast for us, caught 2 males and 1 young female in a 3 way setup under a mobile home while attempting to catch what I thought would be coons. Last week, caught 3 more skunks in my own yard in a drift fence set trying to catch a Dillo tearing up my yard. You can see why my traps are COVERED! Besides their wonderful scent throughout early January and into February, the uptick of run-over skunks on our roads/highways is always a good indicator that they're "chasing each other around the room."

It seems like almost every call I got in January was skunks. Definitely in the double digits on them.

Here are the smallest ones I’ve ever seen. Got them out of a 10” driveway culvert last year by pushing a rod through one end of the culvert with a hardware cloth net on the end. Then going to the other end of the culvert and pulling the rod. Had to do it about ten times before I could reach them.

Set one up today for a client that I removed 4 males from about seven weeks ago. Sprayed last night, tracks in the snow. No den on site unfortunately. I'll have to catch them passing through.

Not a professional, let alone an experienced trapper but I was asked to trap a skunk that's moved into the crawlspace of a house yesterday. I figure catching it will be the "easy" part. What do I do with it after I've caught it? How do you guys dispatch 'em? Thanks

Transferring or making a critter someone else's problem doesn't sound like a very good choice and is actually discouraged by our states statutes.

I was hoping someone would suggest a method that in this case, doesn't result in the animal spraying and really stinking up these folks place...

Our part of Wisconsin does not have a very large population of skunks. We've been relocating them to farmer's fields and other good locations for over 20 years. It seems to me that skunks have a pretty crummy immune system. They seem to catch everything that comes along!

I did suggest a method. You just don't like my method, lol. It's perfectly legal here.

Skunks don't want to spray and if you do come across an ornery one,, they'll be real obvious about telling you about it! When I train a new guy to approach an uncovered trap I tell them I'm going to show them how to do it once. Next time they have to do it. I've never had a new guy hesitate. They're nervous, but man up. Even when they're a lady.

As far as dispatch there are plenty of ways, some have greater chances than others in getting them to spray. I'd remove it from a client's yard before I even considered such an action though.
