Sorry, posted this on wrong site first.

Knowing the scent value of coyote pads some use for lure making, I decided to save the feet and partial leg bone of my coyotes this year. Have any of you coyote trappers utilized a coyote foot in any manner for success? Care to share any method that worked for you?

Tom Krause in his book, Dynamite Fox Trapping, suggested using feet at flat sets. He spiked them down so fox had to work to get them free. He also said you could use any type of feet. The only problem is having them exposed. Krause sifted a little dirt over his flat set feet and let the fox/canine’s nose find them.

Some guys use them in their dirt holes with success too. Just dip the foot in the bait jar and toss into hole.

Illegal set here but I have killed a few yotes with fox feet. Each time it has been when the yotes killed a fox and strung him down a water way. I picked up all the pieces. Made new sets with the feet down a dirt hole. First time next day triple at that location. Both times I’ve had this happen each foot has eventually connected with a yote at or very close to the kill sight.

I'm itchin' to see a coyote twitchin'.

More trappin' and less yappin'.

Make a wobble hole deep enough to stick the leg in so just the pad and toes are showing.

Take your hammer and give it a wack on each side to “stake” it in place better.

A pretty good set, IMO.
I have also made a good many flat sets using a foot , fox, bobcat and yes even coyote, peaking out from under a rock, cow 'chip' or grass tuft and took a lot of predators by doing so.
I also 'nailed' them down.
Down a dirt hole set, you 'll need it deep so it isn't stolen.
I'm not someone who uses foot pads in gland lure, although many do.

If it's legal and you set it right it can be an absolute hammer on coyotes . Think walk throughs with the paw as stepping stick.

Been thinking about this myself...I caught one earlier on a flat set with about 4" of the end of a tail (don't ask). I'm thinking that next season I will implement this tactic.

Bhugo...I would use coyote, just because we don't have many Fox. That's not saying in a highly fox populated area, you couldn't try fox feet.

I did this back in the late 70's when fox trapping. A foot in a deep dirt hole or a foot jammed under the end of a log as a flat set was deadly. It even worked using coon feet, but better with fox feet. This was before the influx of coyotes in the east. Just make sure its anchored so they cant grab it and run, make them work for it.

Maybe you should whittle wooden pegs like they used to use instead of nails?

I’ve caught coyotes and bobcats on fox and bobcat feet. Never tried coyote, but the next one I catch will be footless.

Do you use any extra lure/bait on the foot or just the foot?

The foot by itself works fine.

I’ve used straight feet and feet with a dab of lure...fox gland for fox and bobcat gland for cats.

Thanks for all the input; exactly what I was hoping for; some good ideas I will try; kept a bucket full of coyote feet to try next fall.

Krause suggested some lure on the pad. I don’t recall what kind.
