I need to order more footholds for beaver. I am thinking #5 Bridgers, and if I order offsets can also use for yotes, but worry with beaver front foot catches could have pullouts if they entangle before getting to the end of my drowner. Do any of you use offsets for beaver?

Most of us beaver trappers don't use offset jawed traps for beaver. And you don't need offsets for coyotes.

Yes in Oklahoma we have to use offset for any trap with more then one spring and no 4 springs allowed. I found most factory offsets weren't to my liking eventually ordered a Bridger #5 offset that just had hal a nut welded on each side. Was able to take my angel grinder and narrow to a size more to my liking. I've since copied that design onto bridger #4 and Sleepy creek #4 1/2 as well as the bridger #5. [Linked Image]

Paul Taught me about 15 years ago to never use offsets for Beaver if possible. Because when you miss one, now it is smarter. And there will come a time when you only have one by one or two toes and it held fine because it was not offset.
A number five Will grab yotes too far up the leg IMO which is not what we want. We want to grab the foot, thus the name footholds.
FWIW i earned a good living using bridger 5’s trapping beaver full time year round.

Truth be told a big #5 trap even with an offset will hold most everything it grabs a hold of. If you're trapping for the fur it won't matter if you lose one or two a season, I call them seed. You wouldn't want to leave seed on an ADC job though like John or Paul.

Just think about having to bury that nice big #5 on dryland for coyote though. I'd just buy a few #5s for beaver and a few #2s for coyote and you'll be happier that way. Plus less weight and stuff in your buckets for dryland trapping. But to answer your question I've held beaver fine in my mb750 and Bridger offsets.

The "offset" pushcotrapper is showing wont be a big deal for beaver. The foot will hold the jaw open farther than that.
Arkansas requires offset also, basically any kind of gap in the jaw(even 1/16") is "offset"

I actually have plenty of #2's for yote, so I will just order a few #5 Bridgers without the offset. Thanks for the replies.

Smart move wouldn't use offset for beaver if I didn't have to.

The foot will, but I have caught beaver by only a couple of toes that would have been gone if my trap was offset. Regular jaw MB 750 will hold a 50 lb beaver by two toes. I have seen it more than a couple of times.

For such an outdoor state, our trapping regulations are just plain stupid.

+1 on what Blaine County said.

In reference to the OP and for what it's worth; Last year I was asked to get some beaver out of a pond that were doing quite a bit of damage I had never trapped beaver so I bought a couple of Bridger #5 OS and pulled two springs. I made two castor mounds, set for what I hoped would be a hind foot catch and had two beaver in four days. I figure I was pretty lucky though

#5 Bridgers seem big for coyotes to me. if I were going for a front foot catch on beaver and use the same trap for coyotes I would look at the #3 dogless Bridges.
