Flint lock - could be the smell of a dead bait is veering animals around your sets. Move sets closer to the 'bait station'

Opossums and coon don't hold much interest around here for predators for the most part. They may lie there for some time until times get really rough they may show some interest. Get some deer scraps from your deer or a processor and use them. You will get much greater interest. Birds of prey and crows will work them pretty good though.

Vultures have a great sense of smell like no other. They will walk the ground around any bait pile for some distance at times. I don't really know how you can put a distance out as being far enough not to catch them. They will find what you have lure or bait if you are setting off a bait pile too close

Just setting in a field setting with no big bait smell not so much of a chance of getting one. But could happen with any great odor push material.. Doesn't have to be visible bait either. A good amount of stink is what they will find interest in.

I have used Trout oil sludge for years in places and always have buzzards come in and walk around. It is mostly liquid sludge, even covered they will find it.
