Had an HOA call me today saying a resident was feeding ducks and a beaver came up and grabbed the bread. I figured she was mistaken and went and check the property.. Didn't find any sign.

Cows eat bread, white loaf bread and love it. So do fish and even tadpoles, so why not a beaver.
Bread is made from grain. It's a plant. Beavers eat plants. They don't always eat bark and the cambial layer underneath.
I once caught a rabbit, a cottontail in a fox snare, next to it, was a piece of white loaf bread, the same kind the farmer fed his cows.
Now, how did that piece of bread get next to the dead rabbit ?
I'm thinking the rabbit was carrying it in it's mouth. . .unless you have a better explanation.

(all of a sudden, I'm hungry ) laugh

Maybe a huge catfish. That would possibly look similar to a beaver for someone that didn’t know any better.

Some days I think I could trap anything anytime. Others I wonder if I’ll ever make another catch...

I thought that too, but it's a newly constructed pond.

That is one of the things that make trapping so interesting, you just never know what is going to come up next!

Groundhogs love bread. Considering 90% of callers think groundhogs are beavers, that may be what she saw.

I was surprised how many people thought beavers ate fish. I've always been interested in learning about animals, so it is so strange to me when people have no clue about animals in their own back yard.

I learned from a great local trapper to make foldover peanut butter sandwiches for Nuisance trapping skunks. He always put a peanut butter sandwich and a raw piece of bacon in the trap. I use peanut butter sandwiches all the time and use bread to spread on any paste baits and fold them over. Works get for coon and woodchuck also.

Maybe a muskrat? Looks like a beaver but they're everywhere and this time of year they wander away from their normal home range.

Never seen a muskrat down here. Not sure they exist in North Texas.

i wonder if they are attracted to the white color, since it looks like skint bark
OR
the smell of yeast, etc
or both.
