In Nick Wyshinski bait and lure making DVD he mentions how some makers were having a hard time getting their hands on quality Tonquin. He said he told them they need to get Tonquin #2. Anyone know what he's referring to by #2?

It's a new one too me, but I've been working lure an bait for 15 years.

Tried making my own in the 80's thinking I used a lil
much on ingredients.
Never understand 8 drops laugh

Let me sugar coat this

Yeah, He's talking about synthetic made in a plant in Jersey.
Trust me when I say look the other way
If Google sends you to a page filled with Trapping articles or Supply dealers, disregard it.
That hype flooding the internet to sell you a bottle of lure.

And. . .while you're looking, go on the internet and see what GENUINE AUTHENTIC TONQUIN for the pods of a musk deer is selling for and then you realize no one is going to put that in a $4.00 bottle of lure ! Real Tonquin is sold to the perfume trade. Don't let a lure dealer kid you.
No one takes an ingredient that valuable and puts it in a bottle of trapping lure. When they can buy synthetic in a fraction and I DO MEAN FRACTION OF THE COST
No one !

YOU CAN SKIN AN ANIMALONCE. BUT YOU CAN SKIN A TRAPPER YEAR AFTER YEAR
Remember i told you that

Would it be fair to say the real Tonquin is not used in today's lure? And if not, is the so called Tonquin that is being sold for $4 is being used in today's lure or is it simply left out. Seems to me if someone was able to get real Tonquin and was using it their lure then they wouldn't be selling their lure for $7/ounce either.

In his book Formulating and Compounding Lures & Baits he mentions selling Tonquin in three grades #1 is the real McCoy, #2 is 50/50 real and synthetic and #3 is synthetic. This may be what he is referring to, not sure when his DVD was filmed but likely many years after his books were written (my copies of his books I got before DVDs were being produced).
To my knowledge no 50/50 Tonquin has been available for a long time.

Old time recipes often called for fairly large amounts of Tonquin (measured in fractions of an ounce up to an ounce) which makes me think that they were dealing with a very weak tincture. Others call for just a drop or a few drops. The stuff is potent! As with so many lure ingredients, it comes in varying strength from different suppliers, and seldom is it labeled as to its strength, so if you switch suppliers, or your supplier switches his source, it could throw your formula all off.

2010 I believe is when the DVD was made.
