Those are some really cool photos. Those men, and boys, were tough as nails. Most of them would wipe the floor with most of us. Twice.

I am guessing that is a locking pin (U-shaped?) of sorts he has in his free hand? He's probably putting a nail into the bottom of the jaw post

Back in the day wolf and bear trappers using footholds carried a trapwrench in their pocket to remove the jaw post nut in case they needed to release themselves.
