I posted this in the fur handling section but I think more people will see it here so I’m wanting to start tanning my furs this year But I can’t see myself breaking all of those hides by hand so my question is how big should a fur tumbler be for breaking hides? I’ve heard everything from an old drying machine to a 6 foot minimum for good results. So I hope someone can help. Thanks

6 foot tall by 4 wide is what Bruce Rittel recommends. I know guys that have used the drying machines but those are loaded with golf of tennis balls to break the hides.

Yes everyone that’s said they were using a household size dryer said they were using tennis balls or baseballs in it to help break the hide what I want to know is if that is a viable option because if it is I’ll just go out and by a cheap used dryer and do that.

Just know the dryers do take a beating from this and will fail eventually

So this is a viable option and if it is hard on them about how long will it last one season? If so I could probably live with that unless there’s a much better option in which I’m all ears

If you can get them free or close enough, it's a viable option. If you need to drop some real money on one, you can build one for not much more, assuming plywood has gotten somewhat back to normal price wise

So how big do you recommend it to be?

I tried using a dryer drum. Didn't really do much. Four foot drop is what I have, only because I found a used one that size cheaper than I can build one...add lots of sawdust and hides will do a lot of the work for you.
It kind of seems like the more weight you have in there, the better it works.

They aren't easy to find.
I searched online and eventually found one from someone who used to ranch mink.
You could try taxidermy.net.

Are you planning to do a large volume of skins at one time? If not I don't think a tumbler is worth the investment. Breaking by hand is not that hard to do. I built mine it's 7 foot and does a good job. IMO dryers are next to useless.

Contact Monster Toms on here. He builds them and can tell you everything you need to know. Colorado Cat has a write up on how to use them somewhere in the archives.

ive used an old dryer and put golf balls in. it doesnt do a good job at breaking. i usually throw hides in while im taking a break butkeep the fibers moving somewhat. just remember to disconnect the heater if you do tryt a dryer

Got a link? If it is in SC I would like to take a look at it. Every time I look up "fur tumbler" on Marketplace all I get are a bunch of those cups that they call tumblers

Gotta live up to the nickname...

I’d be all over this if it was closer. This would be the ticket for ya.

These old Mils drums were good machines.
